How Long Will Jalen Williams Be Out? Latest Injury Update on Thunder Star After Concerning News Ahead of Game 3

Let's take a closer look at the latest injury update on Jalen Williams as the Oklahoma City Thunder look to face the Phoenix Suns in Game 3.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are sitting comfortably at 2-0 against the Phoenix Suns in their first-round playoff series, but the mood around the defending champions shifted on Wednesday night when Jalen Williams went down with a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Game 2.

A team that has already endured a brutal injury-riddled season now finds itself staring at yet another setback involving one of its three best players.

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, in Phoenix, and Williams’ availability is very much in question.

What Is Jalen Williams’ Injury Status?

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Thunder have confirmed that Jalen Williams has sustained a Grade 1 left hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis. The injury occurred midway through the third quarter of OKC’s 120-107 win over Phoenix.

Williams had just missed a fast-break layup in transition when he immediately grabbed his left hamstring under the basket. He stayed on the bench for a few possessions before subbing himself out. He was eventually taken to the locker room during a timeout and did not return.

The weekly re-evaluation designation is important. It means there is no set return date and signals that the Thunder are not expecting him to play anytime soon.

Grade 1 hamstring strains are the mildest classification of the injury, involving minor muscle fiber damage without a full tear, but recovery timelines can vary widely depending on how the body responds and the level of rehabilitation. Given that Williams will be re-evaluated weekly, missing Game 3 on Saturday and potentially Game 4 are realistic outcomes.

At the time of his exit Wednesday night, Williams had put up 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting in 23 minutes. He also put up an impressive 22 points in Game 1.

This is actually Williams’ third injury problem of the 2025-26 season. He missed 19 games early in the season recovering from offseason wrist surgery, then sat out 16 consecutive games between February 12 and March 21 with a right hamstring strain.

If Williams is unable to go in Game 3, second-year guard Ajay Mitchell is the most likely candidate to step into a bigger role. Mitchell averaged 13.6 points and 3.6 assists during the regular season and played a key part in OKC’s title run last year.

The Thunder’s depth has been one of their defining strengths all season, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren are more than capable of carrying the offensive load. SGA finished Game 2 with 37 points and nine assists, while Holmgren added 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

Losing a player of Williams’ caliber changes the equation for a Thunder team widely viewed as the favorite to repeat as champions. He was a key piece of last year’s NBA Finals run, averaging 23.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in that series against the Indiana Pacers. The Suns, now heading back to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4, will be hoping the weekly re-evaluation means Williams is not on the floor for a while.
