Hornets Phenom Kon Knueppel Bolsters NBA Rookie of the Year Case With Multiple Historic Shooting Feats

Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel made history on Tuesday as he bolsters his chances of winning the Rookie of the Year award.

Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel made history when they took on the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday. Knueppel has proven why he’s a deserving candidate for the Rookie of the Year award after achieving a historic feat in shooting.

Kon Knueppel Hits 200 Threes This Season

After only 58 games into his rookie season, Knueppel made history after knocking down 200 career threes. The Hornets’ rookie set the record in the third quarter of their game against the Bulls.

With 6:29 minutes remaining in the period, Miles Bridges dished the ball to Knueppel at the top of the key. The rookie then triggered it and sank his 200th three-pointer of the season, making him the fastest NBA player to ever achieve the feat, reaching it in only 58 games.

Knueppel’s historic night doesn’t end there. Besides setting the record for the fastest time to reach 200 three-pointers, he is now one of the only two rookies to ever do it. The other rookie would be the Sacramento Kings’ Keegan Murray, who did it in 77 games in the 2022-23 season.

To add the cherry on top, Knueppel is now the only Hornets player in history to have 200 three-pointers in a season within 60 games. He is also the 15th NBA player to achieve it.

Because of his recent achievements, this would likely bolster his chances of winning the Rookie of the Year award. As of Feb. 11, the Dallas Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg remains in the lead to win the award. However, it’s worth noting that Knueppel, at one point in the season, overtook Flagg in the rookie race. Meaning to say, if he did it before, he can do it again, especially now with a solid case of 200 threes.

Looking at the Hornets’ rookie’s numbers this season, he’s already looking like a star in the league. Knueppel is averaging 19.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. The rookie has also received praise from the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo during the All-Star Weekend, dubbing him as one of the “smartest” rookies he’s ever seen.
