The Miami Heat were not prepared for Terry Rozier’s unexpected suspension, and reports have now emerged revealing that the organization is looking for ways to make the best of its current situation.
After acquiring Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets last season, the Miami Heat did their best to contend in the postseason but failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs. This is no real surprise, considering that they unexpectedly traded away Jimmy Butler III to the Golden State Warriors.
The Heat may have presumed that their trade for Rozier from the Charlotte Hornets in return for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round pick was a good deal, but his ongoing and potentially permanent suspension has caused a fair share of issues. As the Heat look to salvage what is possible, here’s a closer look at the ongoing events.
Can the Miami Heat Get Anything Back for the Terry Rozier Trade?
After news broke that Rozier and several others were allegedly involved in wire fraud, money laundering, and using inside information to place illegal bets, the Heat took these accusations seriously, and Rozier was soon suspended from team activities.
Now that the Heat’s trade involving Lowry and a draft pick has not worked out, the team is attempting to recoup its first-round protected pick from the Hornets. Sources reveal that this protected pick could potentially be pushed to next year, where it will transform into an unprotected pick.
“That pick will convey to the Hornets in 2027 if the Heat makes the playoffs next season. If the Heat misses the playoffs next season, then Charlotte would receive Miami’s 2028 first-round pick, no matter where it falls in the first round.”
Since it is unclear whether the Heat will be able to reverse a trade that has already been completed, predicting the utilization of this first-round draft pick may seem pointless.
It was also revealed that the league had information that Rozier was under investigation during his trade to the Heat. However, the standard protocol was followed, and keeping the Heat in the dark made sense at the time, especially since the investigation could come up short.
