Ja Morant’s shooting woes persisted during Sunday’s 114-100 home letdown against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with the Memphis Grizzlies star point guard’s efficiency hitting a new season low.
Afterward, Morant clapped back at critics of his Year 7 offensive approach, citing the primary reason behind his statistical drop-off.
Ja Morant Bluntly Addresses Offensive Woes After Inefficient 11-Point Night vs. OKC
Memphis got off to a hot start against OKC, building a 19-point first-half lead despite receiving limited production from Morant. However, once the Thunder found their groove offensively, the two-time All-Star’s inability to put the ball in the basket proved detrimental to his team.
Morant finished with 11 points, three rebounds, eight assists, one steal, and two 3-pointers, but shot just 3-for-18 (16.7%). He converted only one field goal in the second half as OKC outscored Memphis 63-38. This includes going scoreless during a back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw Thunder superstar guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander take over late, recording nine of his game-high 35 points to help his squad pull away.
With the lackluster showing, Morant has now shot below 40% in five straight outings and eight of 10 appearances this season. The concerning stretch has fueled speculation about the 26-year-old’s commitment to the Grizzlies following his public feud with coach Tuomas Iisalo.
Still, Morant maintains that his struggles are the result of trying to answer his detractors’ calls to diversify his offensive attack.
“I’m getting no foul calls,” Morant said postgame. “Y’all had a whole spiel about running in there careless and getting hurt. So, what’s now? That’s what y’all want me to go back doing? Let’s end that convo right there.”
I asked Ja about his numbers at the rim being down, too.

Morant added that he will keep firing away with confidence from the perimeter until his shots start dropping.
“That’s why I don’t get too frustrated because I be in this arena, I be in the practice gym doing the same thing,” Morant explained. “Right now, it’s just continuing to shoot, continuing to shoot with confidence and wait for it to translate over.”

Through 10 contests, Morant is posting career-worst shooting marks from the field (35.8%) and from deep (14.8%) by considerable margins. Meanwhile, he is tied for the second-fewest free-throw attempts per game of his career (5.9).
Losers of five of their last six games, the Grizzlies (4-7) will likely need Morant to break out of his offensive slump soon to avoid slipping out of the Western Conference playoff/play-in picture. They are set to embark on a daunting four-game road trip featuring three matchups against teams above .500, beginning with Tuesday’s clash against the surging New York Knicks (6-3).
