Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Rumors: Insider Reveals Major Twist in Knicks’ Bid to Sign Bucks Star

If the Bucks make Giannis Antetokounmpo available, ESPN's Shams Charania says the New York Knicks would lose an advantage they once held.

The New York Knicks remain in a state of anticipation as they await clarity on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future. The franchise has been explicitly identified as his preferred destination. Yet if Antetokounmpo formally requests a trade, the Knicks may not necessarily gain from that preference.

Knicks Might Lose Opportunity To Acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo via Trade

The Knicks had a chance to strike a deal to acquire Antetokounmpo after he named New York as a preferred destination this past offseason, but those talks fell through. They might have another chance to acquire the Milwaukee Bucks’ star, but the trade landscape won’t be the same as it was this past summer.

For one, fans and rival franchises alike need to wait for actual confirmation that Antetokounmpo will be traded. Reports stated that he and his agent have begun discussing his future with the Bucks, and the front office could still convince him to stay.

Another challenge facing the Knicks is that they would not be the only franchise engaged in discussions with the Bucks. Should Milwaukee make Giannis Antetokounmpo available for a trade, other teams are expected to enter negotiations as well, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

“If the Bucks are open to discussing Antetokounmpo with teams, the Knicks will no longer have the exclusive negotiating window as his preferred destination,” said Charania.

If the Bucks decide they are willing to part with their franchise star, then Antetokounmpo’s preference becomes secondary. All 29 other teams can make an offer. At that point, it becomes a question of who has the best assets or the most flexibility in negotiations.

The Knicks’ greatest advantage lies in being identified as Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination. However, the franchise possesses limited draft capital and young talent that could appeal to the Bucks, and their potential salary-matching options — Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby — may not suffice to secure Milwaukee’s interest

Other front offices might be able to put together a compelling package that would entice the Bucks. At this stage, that could mean young, high-value prospects and several draft picks to build for a post-Antetokounmpo future. Several franchises have both.

There are also a handful of Western Conference teams rumored to be interested in Antetokounmpo. The Bucks might ultimately decide they don’t want to strengthen an in-conference opponent, opting instead to send their star as far away as possible.
