Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to be at the center of trade talks as the 2025-26 season comes to a close.
The Milwaukee Bucks kept their superstar past the February trade deadline after talks heated up, but this only raised the possibility of Milwaukee moving Antetokounmpo this summer.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Does Not Want a Move Out to the West
Antetokounmpo has spent his entire 13-year career with the Bucks. They picked him with the No. 15 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft and developed him into a future Hall of Famer. However, the two-time MVP could find himself sporting a new uniform before next season, and he likely plays a major role in determining where he ends up.
Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic wrote about the latest update surrounding Antetokounmpo’s preferred destinations.
“The widely held belief [is] that Antetokounmpo prefers to play in the East, and the level of chatter relating to those teams around the league. To that end, the Portland possibility, which has become such a focal point, is, per league sources, unlikely given Antetokounmpo’s preference to play in the East,” noted Amick and Nehm.

The Portland Trail Blazers sit in a unique position because they have 2028 and 2030 first-round pick swaps with Milwaukee. The Bucks would enter the first stage of a deep rebuild with an Antetokounmpo trade, and having the most control of their draft capital bodes well for a quick trip near the bottom of the standings.
However, the organization’s preferences might not align with the 10-time All-Star’s, as he does not want to make a move out West.
Given Antetokounmpo’s superstar status and franchise legacy, the Bucks want to do right by him. They likely take his preferences into account when deciding which team offers the best deal. This would improve Milwaukee’s reputation among players around the league.
Amick and Nehm also discuss rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers’ and Golden State Warriors’ interest in Antetokounmpo. However, until now, they are just that- rumors. The concrete details on his future remain unknown.
Eastern Conference Team Remains Popular Potential Antetokounmpo Destination
It feels like the Miami Heat are constantly in the running for big-name free agents or trade targets. The same is true for Antetokounmpo. They were arguably the most talked-about team in the Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes at the deadline. Months later, nothing has changed.
Amick and Nehm state that Miami’s trade noise to acquire the 31-year-old “remains louder than all the rest.” Antetokounmpo could not get much further east than the sunny, warm weather in South Beach.
Heat President Pat Riley was disappointed in the team’s play-in finish this season. ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk put Riley’s stance bluntly.
“What Riley despises is not winning at a championship level. He says the Heat will do everything they can in a pivotal summer to upgrade the team,” wrote Youngmisuk.
These comments certainly signal a big move coming this summer. Whether the Greek Freak is that one move remains unknown until now.
