If there is one player Milwaukee Bucks fans should have avoided irritating with boos, it’s likely Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite a disappointing blowout loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night, they may live to regret that decision as his future remains up for debate.
Make no mistake, however, it was a dismal effort from the Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Confronts Bucks Fans After Ugly Home Loss
Trailing 76-45 at the half, the Timberwolves eventually lost 139-106 to a Timberwolves team without their best player, Anthony Edwards. Fans clearly had had enough of their team’s low energy and rained boos on the court, and they’ll feel justified in doing so considering the scoreline. This wrankled their franchise player, and two-time MVP, and he had plenty to say to the fans who booed.
The incident in question occurred at the end of the first half, when the team was down by 31 points. Antetokounmpo missed two free throws to close out the half, and the team was booed as they headed back to the locker room. At the start of the third quarter, he earned an ‘and one’ on a spin move in the paint. Despite the hefty deficit, Antetokounmpo reacted to the basket by aggressively booing the fans in response with two thumbs down.
When asked about it afterwards, Bucks’ Forward made his feelings clear about what he thought of the boos. “I was definitely booing back. When I get booed, I boo back.“
Later, @LoriNickel asked a follow-up to Giannis Antetokounmpo on the booing and his boo back.

Explaining that he’s used to being booed on the road, he hadn’t experienced being booed at home before. “Never. I’ve never been a part of it. Kinda new for me.”
Giannis on being booed at home:
“Never. I’ve never been a part (of it). Kinda new for me. It doesn’t change. It’s the same thing. It doesn’t matter. I thrive through adversity. I thrive when people don’t believe in me. Doesn’t matter if I’m on the road, if I’m at home, if I’m at… https://t.co/Vd8HiDl9ru pic.twitter.com/crAIR29C2m

Even though he was clearly perturbed by the home boos, he made clear it doesn’t change anything for him: “I thrive through adversity, I thrive when people don’t believe in me, it doesn’t matter if I’m on the road, if I’m at home, at my family dinner.”
Regardless of how contentious family dinners may or may not be at the Antetokounmpo household, in fairness to Bucks fans, most, if not all, boos were aimed at the scoreline and effort level rather than booing him personally.
Still, he reinforced to the media that he didn’t think the fans’ treatment was merited. “I don’t think it’s fair…I’ve been here 13 years, and I’m basically the All-time leader in everything.”
This may be a case where the player is frustrated with the result, and that frustration carried over into the post-game, so this minor incident may not influence his long-term thinking. That said, that quote will certainly pique the New York Knicks front office’s interest, among others.
Q: “You got booed at home…Were you booing back?”
…
Giannis: “When people don’t believe in me…I tend to be against them…I’ve never been a part of something like that and I don’t think it’s fair…I’ve been here 13 years and I’m basically the all-time leader in everything” pic.twitter.com/QW87Cd0yHb— New York Basketball (@NBA_NewYork) January 14, 2026
He did tell the Athletic he planned to retire as a Buck. However, as pointed out by SI’s Chris Mannix, he may wait until the offseason, make it clear he won’t sign an extension, which will force the Bucks to trade him without him submitting an official request, thus avoiding upsetting Bucks fans’ feelings toward their franchise player wanting to leave for a contender.
Do these quotes perhaps suggest that his feelings toward the Bucks fan base have changed? Time will tell with the trade deadline looming. It certainly feels less strong as a result of these quotes, even if it was said in the heat of the moment.
