When the Orlando Magic were drafting Paolo Banchero with the first overall pick just four years ago, it didn’t seem like they could become a perennial playoff force this quickly. But a quality roster has given them that opportunity, even though their postseason runs themselves have been underwhelming.
One of the key aspects of that roster construction was the presence of a true second creator alongside their superstar prospect. Franz Wagner filled that role to perfection, allowing them to build a true two-headed snake at the top. However, this year, he’s dealt with a ton of injuries, which is going to cause him to miss a vital matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

How the Franz Wagner Injury Impacts the Orlando Magic
With both Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton initially presumed out for the season, there was an opportunity for a new team to step up this year in the Eastern Conference. A blockbuster trade for Desmond Bane signaled Orlando’s intention to become that team.
However, they haven’t lived up to that billing so far. In a logjam near the bottom of the playoff picture in the East, the Magic sit at 38-33 for the eighth seed. But they still have a legitimate chance of climbing as high as the No. 5 spot, where the Toronto Raptors sit just two games ahead of them.
As a result, each game is vitally important for the franchise at this point. But their pathway to victory when facing a team like the Cavaliers was made even more difficult with the injury to Wagner that is going to cause him to miss the game.
A left high ankle sprain that lingered with him all through the All-Star break has caused him to miss a chunk of time this season. Since the first week of December 2025, he’s suited up in just four total games, combining for less than 100 minutes of in-game action.
Since then, he’s gone through a couple of reevaluations but has remained out of the lineup so far. Last week, things finally progressed in the right direction as he was assigned to the Magic’s G League affiliate.
It marked the first step in his return to the hardwood floor. However, the Cleveland game isn’t going to be the night for Wagner to make his return. Instead, fans in Orlando have to wait a little while longer before he’s integrated back into the fold.
For a team ranked at No. 16 in points per game, his presence as a consistently efficient 21.3-point-per-game scorer should really give them a boost on that side of the ball while helping take some of the attention away from Banchero.
