Simmons was the first pick in the 2016 NBA Draft after one season of college basketball at LSU.
He had been seen as a player who was similar to LeBron James with his ability to pass, score and defend.
Via NBA Australia (on Saturday): “ON THIS DAY 🤩 On February 15, 2021, Ben Simmons scored a career-high 42 points for Philadelphia against Utah. The Australian also added 12 assists, nine rebounds, one steal and one block.”
Simmons spent the first four years of his career playing for the 76ers.
In that span, he had averages of 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 1.7 steals per contest while shooting 56.0% from the field.
The 76ers also made the NBA playoffs three seasons in a row.
Kendrick Perkins wrote (in 2021): “There’s no repairing the relationship between Ben Simmons and the 76ers! They gave Embiid the estate this summer and Ben feels like he’s been a pro through trade rumors and a half a**ed commitment from the team. The Ben Simmons chapter of the process is done. Carry on…”
Simmons spent last year playing for the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers.
He had averages of 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists per contest while shooting 52.0% from the field in 51 games (24 starts).
Via Marc J. Spears of ESPN (on December 23): “With an #NBA return on hold, Ben Simmons is angling for success in pro fishing. While working on a healthy comeback to basketball, the three-time NBA All-Star is a team owner in Sport Fishing Championship. @andscape”
At his age, Simmons could still make a return to the NBA at some point over the next few years.
While he is no longer the player he once was, he showed with the Clippers that he is still capable of defending all five positions on the floor.
Simmons also has experience playing next to a lot of players such as Joel Embiid, Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
