The LeBron James trade saga has gained some serious momentum since it first became a possibility that the 40-year-old, arguably one of the greatest of all time, could request a trade for the first time in his career. After seven seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, it seemed like James was content with retiring in LA.
However, their offseason so far hasn’t gone according to plan, and the timeline for the storied franchise has shifted with the acquisition of Luka Dončić. That, and a rough opening to free agency, has one former player believing in the idea that the four-time MVP’s tenure in Los Angeles might be coming to an end.
LeBron James Not Getting the Hollywood Ending?
Even on the other side of 40, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, while shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from distance as the best player all year long for the Lakers last season.
However, with no real centers on the roster after the Anthony Davis trade, their playoff run had an early expiration date, thanks to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. Now, after opting into his player option worth $52.6 million, James could seek a trade.
And with the Lakers coming up empty-handed as quality big men like Brook Lopez and Clint Capela find new homes, the possibility of the trade continues to grow stronger. With Los Angeles not making any significant moves in the early stages of free agency, former NBA guard Theo Pinson chimed in.
Bron leaving LA

Taking to X, the former Dallas Mavericks player wrote, “Bron leaving LA.”An undrafted player out of North Carolina, Pinson spent six seasons in the league with various teams before retirement. However, in May of 2025, he came out of retirement to join the Puerto Rican Baloncesto Superior Nacional.
With the way free agency is going, James, a historical figure in putting pressure on his front offices to build championship-caliber rosters, requesting a trade might be more inevitable than improbable.
However, the biggest hurdle in a potential trade is going to be the contract. While his production is every bit justified, $52.6 million is going to be a large sum for any team to digest and find the right pieces to trade with.
As a result, the scope of teams in contention for a trade is going to be significantly small. But if it does end up happening, it might go down as one of the biggest blockbuster moves in league history.
