The NBA fans were surprised to learn Monday evening that James Harden and the Los Angeles Clippers are heading towards a split, despite the team’s improbable on-court resurgence over the past month. Contract issues and championship aspirations are believed to be primary factors behind his desire to play elsewhere.
Several teams have since emerged as potential suitors, with the Cleveland Cavaliers appearing to be the frontrunner. Harden holds veto power over any trade and would ideally prefer to go to a contender, but former NFL player Emmanuel Acho has issued a strict warning to the teams interested in pursuing the 2018 MVP.
Emmanuel Acho Warns NBA Contenders To Stay Away From James Harden
Harden has bounced between teams in search of an elusive first NBA championship since entering the league in 2009. The Clippers, whom he joined during the 2023–24 season, marked the fifth team of his career.
Now 36 and in the twilight of his career, it’s unsurprising that Harden wants to join a contender, with the Cavaliers appearing to be a strong potential destination. However, Acho, a former NFL linebacker and current sports pundit, is skeptical, arguing that Harden has never truly elevated a team in his career.
“I would not want James Harden if I were a championship-caliber team,” the former NFL player turned sports pundit declared. “Nothing about James Harden spells Championship. Nothing about James Harden’s career spells Championship. He is all the way over the hill, and James Harden has never been a catalyst for winning championships.”

Acho pointed to Harden’s career trajectory, noting that while he was impactful as a sixth man with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he failed to deliver success in Houston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, or Los Angeles.
“When he’s ever had to be that guy, he’s not that,” Acho added. “So, why in the world would anybody want to trade for James Harden if they actually have championship aspirations? My take, I’m not touching James Harden with a 10-foot pole if I am a contender.”
While Acho’s comments may come across as harsh, there’s substance to his argument, and teams would certainly be weighing it. Harden spent the prime of his career with the Rockets, becoming an MVP and one of the most dominant scorers in NBA history, yet he never got closer to winning a title, though he faced the prime Golden State Warriors.
A potential trade to Cleveland could improve his championship odds, but Acho remains unconvinced that his arrival would meaningfully boost the Cavaliers’ chances. League insiders, however, confirm that Cleveland has expressed interest, and it remains to be seen how negotiations will unfold.
Despite his age, Harden has remained productive this season, appearing in 44 games and averaging 25.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game while shooting 41.9% from the floor.
