Eastern Conference Contender Floated as One of Four Teams Interested in Blockbuster LeBron James Trade

One NBA analyst recently linked LeBron James to a surprising Eastern Conference team after it was revealed they had contacted the Lakers for a trade.

NBA superstar LeBron James exercised his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers at the beginning of free agency, but that hasn’t stopped the trade rumors from swirling.

Four teams reportedly contacted his agent, Rich Paul, about a potential blockbuster deal, and the NBA world is buzzing with speculation about where “King James” might land next.

Which Four Teams Are Pursuing LeBron James?

Los Angeles Lakers insider Dave McMenamin broke the news that sparked this latest round of speculation. According to his report, four teams contacted James’s agent amid ongoing trade rumors, though the identity of these franchises remained unclear.

“When I talked to Rich, he told me that he has not had any discussion with the Lakers about wanting a trade. On the back end of this statement, he did say that four teams have contacted him in the last twenty-four hours wanting to talk trades,” McMenamin revealed.

After the report, NBA analyst Charles Curtis of For The Win explored James’s potential options. His predictions, which he acknowledges are total speculation, linked the Lakers’ superstar to an Eastern Conference contender ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Which Eastern Conference Contender Is Reportedly Interested in Acquiring James?

“There’s been some chatter about this franchise perhaps having interest in LeBron, and it makes a little bit of sense — the team is a contender, a trade might be possible, and could give the Lakers a pretty good return,” Curtis explained, referring to the New York Knicks.

The Knicks have the pieces to make a deal work. Players like OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and a combination of other assets could form the foundation of a trade package. However, following a recent report from another NBA insider, this scenario seems unlikely.

“I don’t think the Knicks have an interest in LeBron James. They think they’ve got a rotation that’s nine or 10 deep right now. Like, they’re not looking to shake that up. Not in a conference, they think they can win with this group,” explained Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.

Despite predicting a trade that some believe is off the table at this point, Curtis acknowledged that the Knicks wouldn’t want to disrupt a roster that could potentially challenge for the Eastern Conference next season.

“But it feels too soon to blow up the core of a team that was this close in 2024-25. We’ll see. But I think Leon Rose at least picked up the phone,” Curtis shared his predictions.

What Other Teams Could Be in the Mix for James?

Beyond predicting a James move to New York, Curtis shared who he believes the three other teams are. The Cleveland Cavaliers, James’s former team, topped his list, alongside the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers.

However, reports earlier in free agency indicated that Cleveland was not interested in bringing their former superstar back to the team. This leaves Curtis’s predictions narrowed down to just two teams, as it becomes increasingly likely that James will remain in Los Angeles.

“He wants to finish his career playing at the highest level, whether that’s in Los Angeles or somewhere else,” NBA insider Shams Charania revealed last month, a claim backed up by James’s agent, Rich Paul.

After making it clear that he will not leave the Lakers for anything less than a contender, with the Knicks and Cavaliers potentially off the table, Los Angeles appears to be the best destination for James to finish his career while remaining competitive.
