Draymond Green didn’t hold back when it came to sharing his thoughts on Evan Mobley’s Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) win. While the Golden State Warriors star may have had his sights set on the award, it was Mobley, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ young center, who took home the prestigious honor.
The 22-year-old’s incredible defensive play throughout the season earned him this milestone, and Green has plenty to say about it.
Draymond Green Congratulates Evan Mobley, Shares His Respect
Green, who finished third in the DPOY voting, offered nothing but respect for Mobley after the award was announced. Green, 35, acknowledged the significance of winning any individual award in the NBA.
Despite coming up short this year, Green made sure to congratulate Mobley with sincerity.
“To win anything in this league is special. Anything you can get recognized in this league is great, you know. So… congratulations to Evan Mobley. Incredible young player,” Green said.
His message highlighted his admiration for Mobley’s growth in the NBA. But the four-time NBA champion wasn’t done there. He went on to reminisce about watching Mobley’s college days at USC.
“I still remember watching him play at USC. He was under the rim, and he blocked the corner. I couldn’t believe him. I have been a fan of him ever since. It’s always great to see young guys getting their due in this league.”

Mobley’s impact on the court this season was undeniable. Averaging 18.5 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, he not only put up solid offensive numbers but also anchored Cleveland’s defense.
His 1.6 blocks per game were a key factor in his selection, making him the first Cavaliers player ever to win the DPOY award.
While Mobley’s win was historic, it also came on the heels of stiff competition. Green, who has long been regarded as one of the NBA’s top defenders, earned 15 first-place votes and 20 second-place votes, totaling 154 points.
Despite a strong push for the award, highlighted by his Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month honors in March, Green couldn’t surpass Mobley, who tallied 285 points. Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks finished second with 197 points, edging Green out for the runner-up spot. However, Green still got the respect of his teammate.
Steph Curry Shows Support for Draymond’s DPOY Push
Warriors’ superstar Steph Curry made sure to show love for his teammate after his strong showing in the Defensive Player of the Year race. While Green ultimately finished third, Curry took to social media to share his appreciation for his teammate’s defensive efforts.
The Golden State guard posted a shoutout on his Instagram stories, celebrating Green’s achievements, including his recent recognition as the 2024-25 NBA Hustle Award winner.
But Curry didn’t stop there. He also backed Green’s case for the All-Defensive First Team, making it clear that he believes his teammate deserves even more recognition.
“Respect,” Curry wrote in the caption, tagging Green. “Definitely my DPOY too but see you on 1st team.”
Curry’s message highlights the high regard Green is held in by his Warriors teammates. It also serves as a reminder of just how critical Green’s defensive presence is to Golden State’s success.
