Draymond Green is one of the best defenders the NBA has ever seen. His influence is why the Golden State Warriors won four titles in an eight-year span and why he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Among the very few players in the NBA who have been put in the same conversation as him defensively is Victor Wembanyama. Green himself recently commented on how the two compare.
What Did Draymond Green Have to Say About Victor Wembanyama?
During his appearance on ESPN’s NBA Today, Green singled out Wembanyama when asked if there’s an NBA player who’s more impactful defensively than him. He fully explained how the two compare.
“The one thing that I do defensively that you’ll never be able to quantify is, I’m a positional defender,” Green said. “So I’m not giving you your spots you want to get to. I like to deter shots. I’m not Victor Wembanyama’s height, so I’m not going to block every shot, so I want to give myself into a spot to where you can’t even get to your shot. But I think that kind of anticipation is sometimes tough to quantify.”
Green then compared to how Wembanyama has a similar impact, but not in the exact same fashion as Green does.
“Well, when you look at a Victor Wembanyama, he is one that does that same thing, but in a different way, because all of a sudden, a guy gets to a hole, whereas you usually take that shot, you see a lot of times, guys see him in the area, they just dribble the ball out.”
Green concluded by humbly admitting that he believes Wembanyama is currently a better defender than him.
“To sit and say today that my defense is more impactful than Victor Wembanyama’s, I think that would be a lie, and I’ve never been one to not be honest. I wouldn’t put myself above him, but I wouldn’t put myself below anyone else.”

The Spurs star truly is a generational talent because most players in NBA history who are as tall and long as he is aren’t as mobile. Hence, it’s much harder to get by someone like him.
It’s why the Spurs are in very rare company in the NBA at the moment. The team they’ve built around Wembanyama has been impressive, but it goes without saying that he single-handedly transforms them into a contender.
This was surprisingly humble from Green, but not too surprising for anyone who knows his analytical skills. Love or hate the Warriors star, Green is a student of the game who wouldn’t have gotten as far as he has had he not mastered it. Because of that, this is a “game recognize game” situation.
