Cavaliers Star Donovan Mitchell Makes Feelings Clear on Rumors That LeBron James May Return to Cleveland

With rumors about a LeBron James reunion heating up, Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell spoke about what that could look like.

A storied career for LeBron James is potentially entering its last legs. After 23 years, it looks like the King is finally starting to slow down, and retirement could be on the horizon for one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. But before he calls it a day, some rumors are circulating about one final chapter in a storybook career.

After spending eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, there is real speculation about the four-time NBA champion ending his career with the hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite emerging as one of the perennially competitive teams in the Eastern Conference, they haven’t leaped into a full-fledged contender. At the All-Star break, their best player, Donovan Mitchell, addressed the rumors about the prodigal son’s return.

Donovan Mitchell Isn’t Shying Away From a LeBron James Reunion

A Cleveland native, James spent the first seven years of his career with the Cavaliers before returning for a second stint in 2014 that ended up giving the franchise their first NBA championship.

Since his departure, the team has found its way back into the playoffs on multiple occasions, with a strong core centered around Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. Recently, they made a flurry of moves at the trade deadline as well.

Adding Dennis Schroeder and Keon Ellis to the lineup, their blockbuster deal came in the form of swapping the injury-prone Darius Garland with James Harden. However, if the rumor mill is to be believed, then the franchise might have its sights set on another James, and Mitchell isn’t too opposed to the idea.

The leading scorer for the team since he came to the roster from the Utah Jazz, he was candid about the Cavs potentially adding the four-time MVP to its current lineup. “As a Bron fan, man, to be able to be a teammate would obviously be special. But that’s not something that I control.”

However, that did not mean that the seven-time All-Star was changing his focus from the current task at hand. “My main focus right now is trying to get this championship, and whatever happens, it happens. That’s not up to me, that’s not up to anybody else in the locker room. So I’m big on believing in what I can control.”

But the idea and gravity of James returning to the city he’s called home isn’t one that’s lost on last year’s All-NBA First Team selection. “It’s LeBron James, right?”
