What Happened to Domantas Sabonis? Kings Star Suffers Serious Injury After Stellar 2024–25 Season

Domantas Sabonis has been dominant this season for the Sacramento Kings, but the power forward will be sidelined once again.

On the night of the Kings’ 132-122 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies—snapping their four-game losing streak — the team suffered a major setback.

Kings Star Domantas Sabonis’ Injury Forces More Missed Games

Earlier this month, the three-time NBA All-Star suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out for six games. Monday’s matchup against the Grizzlies was just his second game back, but it ended with him bleeding on the court and eventually exiting the game.

Sabonis took a cut over his eye after colliding with Luke Kennard, leaving him bloodied. Later in the third quarter, he suffered an ankle injury that forced him out for good.

ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania reported on X that the 28-year-old will now miss significant time due to the ankle injury.

“Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis will miss at least 10 days with a right ankle sprain, sources tell ESPN. The NBA’s leading rebounder returned last week after sitting for six straight games, and will now miss additional time. Kings are 3-6 without Sabonis,” Charania tweeted.

Sabonis has averaged 19.2 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game in 58 appearances this season.

Tough Road Ahead for Kings Without Sabonis

Sabonis isn’t just the NBA’s top rebounder — he’s been a crucial piece on both ends of the floor, providing balance for Sacramento. The Kings currently sit in ninth place in the Western Conference with a 34-33 record.

They hold a two-game lead over the 10th-place Dallas Mavericks (33-36) and a three-game lead over the Phoenix Suns (32-37) in 11th. With Sabonis, they had a shot at pushing for a higher playoff seed, but now, holding onto a play-in tournament spot will be a challenge.

Over the next 10 days, the Kings will play six crucial games—all at Golden 1 Center, their home court.

The first of these matchups will set the tone for Sacramento. They face the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 19, with tip-off set for 10 p.m. ET.
