The 21-year-old wiry French superstar of the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama, is set to face the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on Christmas Day. Despite suffering from a troublesome calf injury, he hopes to be ready for the marquee matchup.
It’s been quite the year for the star, from suffering a scary injury last season to having an incredible second season as a pro, catapulting the Spurs into contention in the process. Wembanyama’s private life has remained somewhat of a mystery, with a clear focus on his on-court success; not much is reported about a potential girlfriend, as we will discover.
A Look at the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama’s Private Life
The uniquely tall 7-foot-4-inch big man with an eight-foot wingspan is almost a cheat code in the paint. Indeed, he notched his 100th consecutive regular-season game with at least one block, putting him in rarified company. He joins Knicks’ Hall of Fame legend Patrick Ewing and the great Dikembe Mutombo on the list — pretty impressive company.
Pretty much everything Wembanyama has done on the court has been impressive this season for the Spurs. Averaging over 24 points, 12 rebounds, and over three blocks on 51.3% shooting this year, he’s truly tough to stop.
So far, it’s been a terrific third season after suffering a scary blood clot in his right shoulder last February, which cost him the rest of that season. He announced he was medically cleared and fully recovered in July. He hasn’t missed a beat on the court since.
Off the court, less is known. Unfortunately, Wembanyama lost his grandmother in France on the eve of the Spurs’ NBA Cup final defeat to the Knicks. Yet, he showed professionalism, putting his grief aside to help his team, only letting his emotions out afterwards, in the post-game press conference. His grandmother was a huge part of his life. She was a constant source of support and had attended several games.
As for any love in his life, this remains private for the French star. Indeed, it’s been reported that he hasn’t had a serious relationship, as he focuses all his energies on his NBA career. The Times of India reported back in February that he does not have a girlfriend.
With a clear goal of achieving greatness in the NBA, it looks like Wembanyama does not want to be distracted by off-court stuff. A relationship may be a possibility down the line, but as of now, his ultimate focus is to be one of the NBA’s greats when all is said and done.
