Dennis Schröder and the Detroit Pistons have a problem, and it’s not going anywhere. Both Schröder and the Pistons might be looking forward to parting ways as contract discussions have not gone the way they were expected to go.
The veteran guard was performing well in Detroit. It turns out, despite his reservations, that his time in the franchise is probably coming to an end.

Is Dennis Schröder Saying Goodbye to the Detroit Pistons?
Schröder went live on Instagram, where multiple fans displayed concerns about his situation with the Pistons. He showed his appreciation for the fans and the city, but also talked about the uncertainty of the situation.
“I want to stay in Detroit for sure, but Detroit ain’t waiting for me, I can tell you that much,” Schröder said on Saturday, June 28, during the livestream.

Schröder started last season with the Brooklyn Nets for 23 games, after which he was traded to the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors later traded him to the Pistons after playing 24 games with him.
He spent the rest of the season in Detroit. Schröder filled in for Jaden Ivey after Ivey underwent surgery for his broken left fibula in January 2025.
Schröder came off the bench and showed his electric side, performing at an elite level in the franchise’s first-round postseason series against the New York Knicks. He proved to everyone what he was capable of doing on the court.
But now, it seems like his time is coming to an abrupt end.
Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon stated earlier this week that Detroit is working on bringing Ivey back to the training camp soon. Per Langdon, having a guard option could work to help the franchise manage his workload as well.
Langdon also mentioned that Detroit is interested in keeping Schröder, Malik Beasley, and Tim Hardaway Jr. close.
“We have stated that we are interested, and they’re interested in us,” Langdon said. “But again, agents have to do their job for their players, survey the market, and see what’s there, and hopefully, we can come to a resolution in bringing those guys back.
“But we have to do our due diligence as well, in case they choose another destination,” Langdon said. “We’d like to get those guys back, but we’ll be prepared to have to go in another direction, if need be.”
While Detroit and Schröder talk it out, other teams like the Sacramento Kings might also keenly pursue Schröder now that he’s in free agency. NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Friday, June 27, that the Kings are looking for a replacement for De’Aaron Fox after they traded him to the San Antonio Spurs last season. Schröder could be a potential choice.
ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania reported that the Dallas Mavericks could potentially pursue Schröder. The Mavericks are looking for options to fill in for Kyrie Irving as he recovers from the ACL tear during the 2025-26 season.
Schröder’s basketball genius is well known. No matter where he ends up, he will bring along his veteran IQ and acumen to the team. Across 75 games last season, he averaged 13.1 points.
