The NBA offseason is already buzzing with trade speculation and one name surprisingly surfacing in the rumor mill is San Antonio Spurs point guard De’Aaron Fox. Despite his recent arrival, a prominent NBA insider has shed light on potential landing spots for the electrifying star should the Spurs consider moving him.
Fox, who arrived in San Antonio via trade earlier this year with his $163,000,300 salary, has been a solid point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama, providing much-needed speed and playmaking.
This season with the Spurs, Fox has averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game, displaying his typical dynamic offensive bursts. However, according to Kevin O’Connor’s recent story from Yahoo Sports, the Spurs might have a difficult decision to make.
De’Aaron Fox’s Upcoming Extension and Potential Landing Spots
O’Connor highlights a critical juncture for the Spurs: “There’s a case to move Fox before he signs a four-year, $229 million extension — or even a cheaper hometown discount deal. He turns 28 later this year. He’s made just one playoff appearance. He still doesn’t have a reliable jumper.
“And for a guard for who lives off speed, any athletic slippage could get ugly fast. And even if he ages gracefully and ends up being by far the most expensive of three quality shot-creators, he won’t come close to having the trade value he holds right now. San Antonio has one last window to sell high.”
This candid assessment underscores the potential strategic rationale behind a trade, despite the seemingly premature nature of moving on from Fox so early into his Spurs tenure. O’Connor then outlines several intriguing trade destinations. One of the proposed deals sees Fox headed to the Miami Heat for Duncan Robinson, Haywood Highsmith, Nikola Jović, the No. 20 pick and unprotected firsts in 2030 and 2032.

This package would significantly upgrade Miami’s point guard spot, while offering the Spurs valuable draft capital and young talent.
The Brooklyn Nets could pursue Fox for Cam Johnson and draft capital. Johnson’s floor spacing ability would align well with Brooklyn’s current timeline.
O’Connor also floated the idea of the Houston Rockets being a potential suitor. A more complex scenario involves the Rockets acquiring Fox (plus Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley) for Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith, the 10th overall pick, and future first-round picks. This trade would give the Spurs a veteran presence in VanVleet and a fascinating frontcourt partner for Wembanyama in Smith.
Beyond these direct trade proposals, O’Connor also identifies other playmaking needy teams like the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

He specifically pointed out that Phoenix is especially interesting. “If the Spurs really want Durant, Fox’s salary helps make the math work. Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes or Devin Vassell could be added to build a separate, bigger deal.”
The future of De’Aaron Fox in San Antonio remains a tantalizing storyline as the NBA offseason unfolds.
