Midseason trades rarely come without emotions. For a young All-Star who helped reshape a franchise, the transition can feel even more abrupt. That was the reality for Darius Garland, whose move from Cleveland to Los Angeles sent shockwaves through both locker rooms.
At first, the change felt uncertain. But perspective, and a little California sunshine, quickly shifted his outlook.
Darius Garland Says Bigger Role With Clippers Stands Out
Garland admitted he was “kind of skeptical” when the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for 11-time All-Star James Harden on Feb. 3. But after arriving in Los Angeles, Garland said one major difference immediately stood out: opportunity.
“I’m good with the change,” Garland told Andscape. “When it first happened, I was kind of skeptical. But I couldn’t turn down this opportunity to play with another Hall of Famer [Leonard] and having a ball in my hands damn near 99 percent of the time.”
That expanded offensive role contrasts with his situation in Cleveland, where he shared primary duties alongside Donovan Mitchell and now Harden. The Cavaliers’ move signaled a clear win-now push, pairing Harden with Mitchell to maximize their championship window.
Garland, meanwhile, views Los Angeles as a fresh start.
“But now, I’m over here in a really good situation,” he added. “I have the ball in my hand a lot more where I could do me a little bit more. I have another superstar [Leonard] next to me. I can go get it as well.”
He also pointed to the literal difference between markets. “The first day, I literally called my mom and said, ‘This is the first time I’ve seen sun in February,'” Garland said, describing how the Los Angeles lifestyle instantly boosted his mood.
Garland Embraces L.A., While Acknowledging Injuries Played a Role in the Cleveland Exit
Garland acknowledged that his surgically repaired toe and subsequent sprain factored into Cleveland’s decision. He has appeared in just 26 games this season and has not played since January 14.
“It was going to happen regardless, either at the deadline or this summer,” Garland said, noting that his agent, Rich Paul, had discussed the possibility months ago. “But yeah, the toe definitely had a factor in it … They want to win right now.”
The Cavaliers’ urgency contrasts with the Clippers’ current direction. While Cleveland surged after acquiring Harden, Los Angeles pivoted toward recalibration around Kawhi Leonard.
Garland said he plans to make his Clippers debut “really, really soon,” pending clearance from team doctors. Beyond basketball, Garland is embracing the broader opportunity in a big market. He spoke about building chemistry with Leonard and immersing himself in Los Angeles culture, from fashion to technology.
“I’m trying to sit next to him on the plane … just to see where his mindset is,” Garland said of Leonard. “He just wants to win basketball games. So, we’re on the same type of time right now.”
Garland also expressed appreciation for Cleveland, ranking among the franchise’s all-time leaders in assists and 3-pointers. He insisted there are “no hard feelings,” calling the move a “good change.”
Now, the focus shifts to impact. For Garland, the biggest difference isn’t just the weather or the market size. It’s controlling the ball in his hands and a chance to shape the Clippers’ next chapter. If that opportunity translates on the floor, Los Angeles may soon see why Cleveland was once built around him.
