Wizards’ Corey Kispert Boldly Predicts Seattle Will Once Again Have an NBA Team: ‘Just a Matter of Time’

In a recent interview, Corey Kispert emphasizes the underappreciated basketball talent of the Pacific Northwest and strongly advocates for the NBA's return to Seattle.

Edmonds native and former Gonzaga standout Corey Kispert is not afraid to show his pride in his Pacific Northwest roots.

In a recent interview with RG.org, the Washington Wizards’ sharpshooter opened up about the region’s basketball culture, its impact on the game, and why he believes Seattle is long overdue for another NBA franchise.

The Pacific Northwest: “Under-Recognized” Basketball Gold

When asked about the state of basketball in the Pacific Northwest, Kispert defended the region’s talent pipeline without hesitation.

“First of all, the talent out there is still pretty under-recognized,” he said. “We’ve got everything — max players, role players, defenders, Hall of Famers, legendary scorers, the list goes on. It’s a great place to learn the game and to invest in the game.”

The Pacific Northwest has been a source of elite-level players for generations, from NBA legends such as John Stockton, Doug Christie, Brandon Roy, and Jamal Crawford to current stars like Dejounte Murray, Paolo Banchero, and Zach LaVine. According to Kispert, the basketball world still ignores the region’s depth and consistency.

He highlighted the importance of the culture’s foundation being fundamental: creativity and competition, which have shaped many of the league’s most unique and dynamic players.

The area remains an ideal breeding ground for talented players, whether through AAU circuits, high school powerhouses, or college programs like Gonzaga and Washington.

Kispert Makes Case for Seattle as Fertile NBA Ground

With an abundance of passion, Kispert discussed the potential return of the NBA to Seattle. The Emerald City has been without a team since the Seattle Supersonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008, a move that remains deeply felt throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“We definitely need a team back in Seattle,” Kispert said firmly. “Guys on this team who’ve spent time in Seattle love the city — honestly, most players do. Hopefully, it’s just a matter of time before we get a new franchise there. It would be really good for the league.”

Seattle has been a top contender for any future expansion since NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged it years ago. The city has gained strength in its case with the recent renovation of Climate Pledge Arena, the success of the Seattle Storm, and the return of the NHL’s Kraken.

Seattle is not only seen as deserving by Kispert, but also essential for many other current and former players. The city has a strong grassroots basketball community that produces professionals at all levels and maintains a loyal fan base eager for the NBA’s return.

Pacific Northwest Overdue for NBA Recognition, Opportunity

Kispert believes that the Pacific Northwest has been too significant for the sport to remain on the sidelines. The basketball community is vibrant, the talent pool is extensive, and the fans remain as passionate as ever.

Kispert is always proud of the region in which he was born, whether it’s highlighting the overlooked brilliance of local players or advocating for a revival of the Sonics.

It’s clear that the Pacific Northwest’s basketball story isn’t over yet, and Kispert believes the NBA should return to Seattle in its next significant chapter.
