Cooper Flagg Stats Tonight: Breaking Down the Mavericks Rookie’s Career-Best Performance vs. Hornets

Recapping Mavericks phenom Cooper Flagg's career-best showing during Thursday's home clash against his former Duke co-star Kon Knueppel.

Dallas Mavericks rookie phenom Cooper Flagg delivered the top performance of his young career during Thursday’s home clash against the Charlotte Hornets, nearly reaching the 50-point threshold.

However, it wasn’t enough, as his former Duke co-star Kon Knueppel powered Charlotte to a thrilling 123-121 victory, spoiling his historic night.

Mavericks Come Up Short Despite Cooper Flagg’s Career-High 49-Point Outburst

Competing in their first-ever head-to-head NBA regular-season matchup, Flagg and Knueppel each rose to the occasion and then some.

Flagg tallied a game-high and career-best 49 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one block, and three 3-pointers, shooting a blistering 20-for-29 overall (69%) and perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

The 19-year-old’s 49-point total marked the highest by a teenager in NBA history, surpassing Cliff Robinson’s 45 points for the New Jersey Nets on March 9, 1980, and also set a Mavericks rookie scoring record.

Flagg showcased his upside as a three-level scorer, getting to the rim at will and finishing in a variety of facets, while also knocking down his outside shots at an above-average clip. This includes drilling a pull-up triple to tie the game at 121-121 with 33.1 seconds remaining.

Unfortunately for Flagg, his turnover and subsequent foul on Knueppel’s fast-break drive to the basket with 4.1 seconds to go allowed Charlotte to take a 123-121 lead. The 2025 No. 1 pick then missed a heavily contested potential game-tying midrange shot attempt at the buzzer after fighting through multiple defenders.

On top of sealing the win at the charity stripe, Knueppel made history of his own with his offensive proficiency. The Hornets sharpshooter recorded a career-high 34 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal, and a franchise rookie record eight 3-pointers on efficient 10-for-16 shooting overall (62.5%) as his squad improbably secured its fifth straight victory.

The former Blue Devils are widely projected to be the top-two finishers in the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year race, with Flagg positioned as the betting favorite.

After Thursday’s eruption, Flagg is averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.8 blocks, and 1.0 3-pointers per game on 48.2% shooting through 44 appearances, a testament to his remarkable versatility for his age.

Flagg’s dynamic play continues to offer a glimmer of hope for the injury-plagued Mavericks (19-29). Their latest defeat marked their third straight, as a play-in berth moves increasingly out of reach.
