‘Gonna Be Special for a Long Time’ — NBA World Reacts to Cooper Flagg Making History in Lakers-Mavericks Game

Cooper Flagg making history in the Lakers-Mavericks game drew massive reactions and praise from the entire basketball world.

Cooper Flagg continues to rewrite the record books in his rookie season. After his historic 51-point game against the Orlando Magic on Friday, the 19-year-old followed it up with 45 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

Amid praise from LeBron James, the rest of the basketball world had plenty more to say.

NBA World Reacts to Cooper Flagg’s Generational Weekend

The scope of what Flagg accomplished over the weekend gave analysts, reporters, and basketball voices a lot to process.

PFSN’s Deputy Editor Alex Kennedy set the baseline with the raw numbers. “Cooper Flagg followed up his 51-point game with a 45-point, 9-assist, 8-rebound, 2-steal, 1-block performance in Dallas’ win over the Lakers.”

The NBA’s official account added the latest historical layer from Sunday’s game. Flagg became the first teenager in the play-by-play era, since 1997–98, to score at least 19 points in an opening quarter, extending a historic stretch that began with Friday’s all-time teenage scoring record.

Legion Hoops, citing StatMuse, broadened the generational framing. “Cooper Flagg now has more 40-point games as a teenager than LeBron,” they posted. “He’s gonna be special for a long time.”

The milestone carries particular weight, given that it came on the same night James, at 41, was sharing the floor with him and co-writing NBA history.

Sports influencer Matthew Geist of Six Rings of Steel extended the timeline further. “There’s a real chance Cooper Flagg makes an All-NBA team next year. He’ll be 20,” he wrote.

Peacock’s Jamal Crawford, a three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year and one of the more respected analytical voices in the sport, cut straight to the most pressing individual award conversation. “Just call him ROY,” Crawford said. “He looks like the Rookie of the Year to me.”

The timing matters here. Flagg entered the weekend trailing Kon Knueppel by 60 first-place votes in an ESPN straw poll of likely voters. His 96-point weekend appears to have shifted that momentum dramatically.

Kevin O’Connor of “The Kevin O’Connor Show” closed the conversation with a franchise-building argument.

“The Mavericks winning the lottery is easily one of the most entertaining outcomes,” he wrote. “Pair Cooper Flagg with a co-star to grow with and become contenders to compete with OKC and San Antonio for many years to come.”

What This Performance Means for Flagg’s Rookie of the Year Race

The most meaningful endorsement of the night came from James himself. After the game, the 41-year-old superstar did not hesitate when asked about Flagg.

“Cooper’s been in the zone over the last couple of games, but also just been playing consistent basketball all year,” James said. “That’s great, as a fan of him, and a fan of the game.”

The weekend produced numbers that belong in the same sentence as the all-time greats. Flagg and Wilt Chamberlain are now the only rookies in NBA history with 96 or more points over any two-game span, per Elias Sports Bureau.

Flagg also became the first rookie since Allen Iverson in 1997 to post back-to-back 40-point outings.

With odds likely to flip in Flagg’s favor after Sunday’s performance, the Rookie of the Year race has been reset entirely heading into the final games of the regular season. Knueppel’s lead in the straw poll was real, but Flagg has now given every remaining voter a reason to reconsider.
