Concern Mounts Over ‘Safety of Players and the Front Office’ as Mavericks Fans Are Furious About Luka Dončić, Anthony Davis Trade

The Luka Dončić trade has left the league worried about the Dallas Mavericks fanbase reacting violently against team executives and players.

The Luka Dončić trade has shaken the NBA world to its core. The Dallas Mavericks unceremoniously traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers of their own volition in a move that has been called one of the worst mistakes in league history.

Now, with fan sentiment firmly against the team, security concerns are starting to rise. During the broadcast of their road game against the Boston Celtics on Feb. 6, a special message had to be dished out as well.

Safety Warning Issued for the Dallas Mavericks

One of the most trusted sideline reporters in the league, Allie LaForce, had to break the news on the broadcast. The Mavs pulled off an upset over the Celtics in TD Garden, beating them 127-120. However, the concern for the team went far beyond the scoreboard.

In exchange for Dončić, general manager Nico Harrison, who didn’t consult other teams beyond the Lakers’ offer, got Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a singular first-round pick. For a 25-year-old in the middle of his prime, the idea was unthinkable.

As a result, the general sentiment among the Dallas fanbase has been incendiary. “One big concern, though, is just the safety of the [Mavericks] players and the front office going back to Dallas,” LaForce revealed.

Furthermore, they pleaded with fans about the repercussions of their actions. “We hope fans make the wise decision and remember that this is a game and that lives are far more important.”

Dončić was drafted by the Mavs in the 2018 NBA Draft. He was a five-time first-team All-NBA and All-Star selection, the former standing as the fifth-highest mark among all active players in the league.

He was already a league’s scoring champion and had led Dallas to two Western Conference Finals in the past three seasons, including a trip to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season. Oh, and did we mention that he’s 25 years old?

With a decade of basketball ahead of him, the move felt wrong on multiple fronts. It was a betrayal to Dončić as well, who wasn’t consulted about the move and had even reportedly bought a $15 million mansion just a week before.

Citing concerns about weight and defense, Harrison’s reasons felt hollow to a fanbase that had just seen its greatest success since prime Dirk Nowitzki.

And, it goes without saying that if such a warning was necessary on the broadcast, it probably tells you all you need to know about the trade.
