Trail Blazers HC Chauncey Billups’ Press Conference Video Resurfaces After FBI’s Arrest

Chauncey Billups was arrested in a federal gambling probe involving poker games. Tiago Splitter will be the Trail Blazer's interim coach.

When it rains, it pours in Rip City. The Portland Trail Blazers, who were already navigating a rough start to their 2025–26 campaign, now find themselves caught in a whirlwind far beyond the court.

The team’s early frustrations have taken a shocking turn after dropping three of their four preseason matchups and falling 118-114 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in their season opener.

What began as an ordinary October morning quickly spiraled into chaos following federal reports linking head coach Chauncey Billups to a sprawling illegal gambling operation, and now, one of his recent press conference clips is going viral for all the wrong reasons.

What Did Chauncey Billups Say During an Interview?

On Thursday morning, ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania dropped a bombshell report that revealed that Billups has been arrested for alleged involvement in an illegal gambling operation.

According to federal prosecutors, Billups’ arrest is connected to a series of high-stakes poker games that were allegedly rigged by mafia associates, scamming unsuspecting participants out of at least $7 million.

Moreover, he’s not the only one caught in the web. Former NBA player Damon Jones, who is accused of leaking confidential team information to aid gamblers, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who was implicated for betting on games, were also reportedly taken into custody.

As soon as the news broke, fans began combing through recent interviews, and one particular quote from Billups’ Wednesday night postgame press conference began making waves online.

After the Blazers’ loss to the Timberwolves, Billups was asked if he felt additional pressure to perform given that Tom Dundon, the franchise’s prospective new owner, was in attendance. Billups’ response, which many at the time took as a metaphor, has taken on an entirely new meaning in light of recent events.

“That pressure thing is nothing to me, man. I do the best I can and let the chips fall where they may. You know that about me by now,” said Billups during the postgame interview.

After a stellar 17-year playing career and a brief stint as an analyst, Billups began coaching as an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2020–21 season, learning under head coach Tyronn Lue.

His reputation for defensive intensity and mentorship earned him the Trail Blazers’ head coaching job in 2021. Over the next four seasons, he tried to rebuild a young and inexperienced roster and finished with a 117–212 regular-season record (.356) but failed to secure a single playoff appearance.

With Billups sidelined amid the investigation, Charania reported that assistant coach Tiago Splitter will serve as the interim head coach.

While Portland also considered Nate Bjorkgren for the interim role, internal discussions reportedly led to the decision that Bjorkgren would better serve the team by remaining in his current capacity.

As the franchise scrambles to maintain focus amid the chaos, all eyes now turn to Splitter, tasked with steering a shaken locker room through uncertain waters.
