LeBron James’ drawn-out free-agency decision continues to dominate the NBA offseason, with a reunion with the Miami Heat viewed as one of the four-time MVP’s most realistic scenarios for his unprecedented 24th season.
While The Ringer’s Bill Simmons is intrigued by the possibility of Miami landing the summer’s top free agent, the Boston Celtics superfan didn’t shy away from acknowledging that he is hoping the move backfires for the aspiring Eastern Conference contender.

Miami pulled off arguably the biggest trade of the offseason, flipping a package of players and draft capital headlined by Tyler Herro for superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. The organization now boasts a top-five-caliber player as well as one of the NBA’s premier two-way big men in Bam Adebayo.
Still, the Heat are left with the task of rounding out their roster around the high-profile frontcourt pairing despite possessing limited financial flexibility. Though they have already signed veteran sharpshooter Tim Hardaway Jr. and added stretch big man Bobby Portis in the Antetokounmpo deal, playmaking remains a glaring need.
James, one of the most versatile players in league history, coming off his record-extending 22nd All-Star campaign, marks the ideal target for Miami to address its biggest weakness. Simmons, however, doesn’t foresee the potential signing moving the needle in South Beach.
“There’s two reasons I think it would be fun if he went to Miami,” Simmons began on Wednesday’s edition of “The Bill Simmons Podcast.” “One is that I think that’s a terrible fit of all those guys together.
“And two, their annoying fans and their even more annoying media will be going nuts that they think they’re going to win the title, and it’s going to be really fun to watch that crash and burn. So, if he goes there, great. … It’s THE most annoying media. They know it. That’s the only way they get attention.”

Simmons has been open about his disdain for Miami over the years, often referring to the team as the “Zombie Heat” due to its resilience and tendency to defy expectations under Erik Spoelstra’s coaching.
Even so, coming off a middling 43-win season and 10th-place finish in the East in the 2025-26 season, Simmons envisions Miami needing a lot more than James to truly contend with its new-look roster.
Notably, Simmons’ Celtics are widely projected to be in a similar tier of teams as the Heat after unexpectedly swapping Jaylen Brown for Paul George this offseason. If James ultimately rejoins Miami, the outspoken analyst should have no shortage of opportunities to continue taking shots at Boston’s intraconference rival.
