Everything was going smoothly for the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. They got a win, however narrow that is. They had a renewed momentum after the All-Star break. But while the scoreboard read 125-122 in their favor, post-game conversations took a quick shift.
As analysts broke down the results, Charles Barkley’s voice didn’t hold back. This time, Austin Reves happened to be in earshot.
Charles Barkley Doubles Down, Says Lakers Aren’t Championship Contenders
Charles Barkley made his stance crystal clear during Inside the NBA after the Lakers won against the Clippers. “Neither one of these teams are any good. No disrespect. They’re not championship contenders. They maybe can win a round,” Barkley said bluntly.
He didn’t stop there. “Just because they won, that they beat a mediocre Clippers team, and I know the guys going to go on TV because, you know, they throw them stats out there…When those three guys play together, they still ain’t going to [contend],” he continued.
The trio in question? Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves, who combined for 80 points in the win. Doncic led with 38 points and 11 assists, Reveas poured in 29, and James added 13 points and 11 assists of his own.
Still, Barkley believes they don’t stand a chance. “If they’re six, seven, and eight and they have to play Denver, Houston, or OKC, they’re not going to beat those teams. I’m not even sure they can beat San Antonio. Let me rephrase it: they can’t beat San Antonio.”
Yes, the criticism was sharp. But the timing? Even sharper. Because Reveas was waiting to be interviewed while Barkley continued his comments. The moment was compelling, and soon after, the cameras turned to him. Reaves didn’t flinch. He shrugged off the noise and said, “Yeah, I heard a little bit. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” he said calmly.

That was it. No rebuttal. No theatrics. A calm and collected, but sharp response.
The Lakers improved to 34-21 with the win, sitting fifth in the West. Reaves has been a key reason for that positioning. Since returning from injury on Feb. 3, the 27-year-old is shooting over 53% from the field in this month and averaging 21.5 points per game as a secondary scorer next to Doncic.
Despite the surge, defensive concerns remain. The Lakers rank near the bottom of the league in defensive rating, a statistic critics often cite when questioning their ceiling.
Barkley isn’t entirely wrong in his criticism. The West does feature all heavyweights, like the Nuggets or OKC. Teams like Houston continue to climb. But as far as the rest of the season is concerned, it hinges more on star power and health. If Doncic, James, and Reaves continue their momentum, the narrative can change. Only time will tell whether Barkley’s words age well.
