With the 2025 NBA Draft just hours away, Texas standout Tre Johnson remains one of the most talked-about prospects. While some experts project him as high as the No. 3 overall selection, many analysts believe he’s more likely to land between the Nos. 6 and 8 picks. Johnson, known for his elite shooting ability, has seen his draft stock surge in recent weeks.
His offensive upside continues to draw interest from several teams picking in the lottery. Viewed as one of the best scorers in this class, Johnson is expected to adjust quickly at the professional level. The combination of his shot-making and long-term potential makes him an intriguing target for teams seeking perimeter scoring.
Rumors Swirl as Tre Johnson Climbs 2025 NBA Draft Boards
As the 2025 NBA Draft approaches, Texas guard Tre Johnson continues to generate buzz, with rising projections placing him anywhere from the top three to the middle of the lottery. CBS Sports’ latest mock draft has the Philadelphia 76ers using the third pick to select Johnson, highlighting him as a potential franchise cornerstone after a turbulent season.
However, hoops analyst Jake Weinbach offered a different take, suggesting Johnson will land in Washington, responding simply with “Washington” when asked about the guard’s likely destination on social media.
Tre Johnson said that he has a great relationship with the Wizards, and that his visit with them was like “a college visit.”

Johnson, a 6-foot-6 freshman, delivered an impressive campaign at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He shot 42.7 percent from the field, 39.7 percent from beyond the arc, and connected on 87 percent of his free throws. His shot-making ability at all three levels, along with his composure in high-pressure moments, has helped elevate his draft stock in recent weeks.
Despite being viewed primarily as an offensive weapon, Johnson acknowledges that improving defensively remains a priority. In a pre-draft interview with Andy Katz, he emphasized what sets him apart.
“I’m going to do what others won’t,” Johnson said. “I’m going to play defense, that’s one way, and just watch film to see how I can be different from other players and find different ways to help the team win.”

To prepare for the next level, Johnson has studied the games of MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Phoenix guard Devin Booker.
“They aren’t the most athletic guys or the fastest, but they are effective,” he said. “Devin is more effective without the ball, and Shai is effective with it, so putting those together in one player would be good.”
Johnson finished his lone season at Texas as the Southeastern Conference’s leading scorer, earning Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the All-SEC Second Team. His consistent production and polished offensive game give teams confidence in his transition to the league.
While questions remain about his defense, his scoring potential and adaptability have drawn serious interest. Whether he ends up in Philadelphia, Washington, or elsewhere, Johnson’s name is expected to be called early as teams look to secure a future star.
