Adam Silver Makes Feelings Clear on Chris Paul’s Possible NBA Comeback After Shocking Clippers Fallout

Adam Silver reacts to the sudden Chris Paul-Clippers split, hinting at what could come next as the veteran’s future hangs in limbo.

It has been weeks since NBA legend Chris Paul was sent home by the LA Clippers in a stunning decision that reshaped the final chapter of the point guard’s career

Earlier this month, the Clippers announced during a road trip that they were moving on from Paul, sending him home. There was no farewell press conference, no clear resolution, and no immediate plan forward. For a player in his 21st season and on what amounted to a farewell tour, the move felt abrupt.

Adam Silver Optimistic About Chris Paul’s NBA Return

NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged as much when asked about the situation. His reaction was personal. Silver said he had spoken separately with Paul and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, but not directly about the decision itself. Like much of the basketball world, he learned about it through an alert on his phone.

“I’ve talked to Chris, I’ve talked to Steve Ballmer, but frankly, not about this. I would say I was dismayed just for everyone involved,” Silver said on Tuesday. “I’ve admired [Paul’s] leadership over the years. He’s had a dozen All-Star appearances. I think it’s his 21st year in the league, so I would love to see him finish off the season on another team. He’s already announced this is his last season. I’d love to see him finish strong.”

Paul’s history with the Clippers makes the fallout even more striking. He first arrived in Los Angeles in December 2011, becoming the face of the “Lob City” era alongside Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

He left in 2017, only to return in July 2025 on a one-year deal for what he had already identified as the final season of his career. The reunion was supposed to be a respectful closing loop. Instead, it ended in confusion.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne published a detailed report explaining how the relationship between the Clippers and Paul deteriorated. According to Shelburne, Paul’s demanding leadership style had worn thin with members of the coaching staff and front office. Assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy, in particular, reportedly clashed with Paul repeatedly.

The breaking point came after an argument on the team plane in Miami over defensive coverages. Shortly after, Paul met with Clippers president Lawrence Frank in Atlanta. That meeting changed everything.

“Paul was stunned, sources said, and tried to plead his case,” Shelburne reported. At one point, Paul even brought teammate Brook Lopez into the room to vouch for him. Lopez and Kawhi Leonard were described as Paul’s strongest supporters. Frank listened but did not budge. The decision, Paul was told, had already been made.

Now the focus shifts to what comes next. Paul has not been waived, and he has not played his final NBA game. Because he signed a new contract this offseason, he was not trade-eligible until Dec. 15. That changes Monday.

The Clippers could look to move Paul and recoup value rather than letting the situation linger. Silver’s comments suggest the league office would welcome that outcome. For a player who announced in November 2025 that he plans to retire after the 2025–26 season, another ending like this would feel incomplete.

The Clippers, meanwhile, remain silent, and Paul remains away from the team. The standoff has turned what should have been a celebration of a legendary career into an uncomfortable waiting game.

Whether Paul returns to the court this season is still unknown. What is clear is that even the commissioner, as much as the NBA world hopes, wants the final pages of this career to be written on the floor.
