The end of October usually brings excitement to the NBA with packed arenas, and stars returning to action after a long offseason. But this year, the start of the season has been overshadowed by a betting scandal.
Three NBA figures — Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former player Damon Jones were arrested as part of a stunning FBI gambling investigation that sent shockwaves through the league.
Adam Silver Vows to Uphold League’s Integrity While Addressing the Gambling Scandal
For NBA commissioner Adam Silver who is already grappling with the Kawhi-Clipper salary cap circumvention issue, the new betting scandal is a gut punch and he feels it.
Speaking publicly for the first time since Thursday’s arrests, the NBA commissioner didn’t hold back words about his reaction.
“My initial reaction was I was deeply disturbed,” Silver told Amazon Prime reporter Cassidy Hubbarth during Friday’s Knicks-Celtics game at Madison Square Garden. “There is nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition.”
Silver said he felt “a pit in [his] stomach” upon hearing that a current player, a head coach, and a former NBA player — who also happens to be a close friend of LeBron James, were allegedly involved in illegal gambling.

According to federal prosecutors, Billups, Rozier, and Jones were among over 30 individuals indicted in two connected gambling cases.
Authorities allege Rozier intentionally removed himself from a game in March 2023 to help a co-conspirator win a bet on his “under” prop totals, while Billups reportedly took part in a rigged poker game involving organized crime figures. Jones, who has worked as a coach and media analyst, is accused of having ties to both cases.
The scandal traces back to a game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023, when sportsbooks flagged suspicious betting activity on Rozier’s performance.
A professional bettor had reportedly placed around 30 bets within an hour, all predicting Rozier would fall short of his averages. Rozier played only 10 minutes that night before leaving with a foot injury.
The NBA initially investigated the incident but found “insufficient evidence” of wrongdoing. Silver explained that while regulators noticed “aberrational betting behavior,” Rozier had fully cooperated, handing over his phone and sitting for interviews.
“At the time, we couldn’t find proof of anything,” Silver said, adding that the league had since been working closely with federal authorities, who can subpoena and gather evidence the NBA can’t. “What they announced yesterday was an indictment.”
But it seems that Rozier is in big trouble now, and the NBA is committed to taking a hard stance and keeping the league’s integrity intact.
League’s swift response to NBA Betting Allegations
The NBA responded quickly to the arrests. In a statement, the league said it was reviewing the federal indictments and that both Rozier and Billups had been placed on immediate leave.
“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority,” the statement read.
The arrests have triggered a firestorm across the sports world, not only for the names involved but for what they represent–a direct challenge to the credibility of professional basketball.
For now, the NBA is in full damage-control mode. Silver has promised full cooperation with the FBI and emphasized that the league’s integrity is non-negotiable.
