Dillon Brooks joined the Phoenix Suns last offseason as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets.
After spending just one season in Phoenix, Brooks secured a lucrative contract extension on Wednesday, sparking mixed reactions across the NBA.

The Suns failed to reach the playoffs during the 2024-25 campaign despite having Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal on their roster. However, with Brooks joining the team, Phoenix improved to a 45-37 record this past season and returned to the postseason.
Brooks emerged as the Suns’ second offensive option behind Booker and played a significant role in the team’s turnaround. His impressive season ultimately convinced Phoenix’s front office that he was worth keeping as a long-term cornerstone.
NBA insider Shams Charania reported Wednesday that Brooks agreed to a three-year, $73 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2029-30 season.
“Brooks has become a key part of the Suns’ two-way, hard-nosed culture under Jordan Ott and lands a new guaranteed long-term deal,” Charania wrote.

Brooks’ future had been one of the Suns’ biggest offseason storylines since he was entering the final year of his previous deal.
Fellow league insider Brett Siegel noted that Phoenix had the flexibility to offer Brooks a four-year, $125 million extension, which would have carried an average annual value of $31.3 million. Instead, the two sides settled on a three-year, $73 million agreement, reducing the annual average value to approximately $24.3 million.
NBA salary cap analyst Yossi Gozlan explained that Brooks will earn roughly 13% of the team’s salary cap each season. He added that the reasonable average annual salary on a relatively short three-year deal should allow Brooks to maintain strong trade value throughout the life of the contract.
Phoenix’s decision to reward Brooks with a long-term extension quickly received praise from around the NBA community.

The Suns showed no hesitation in rewarding Brooks following the best season of his career. He averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the field and 34.4% from beyond the arc across 56 games.
Still, not everyone agreed with Phoenix’s decision to hand Brooks a lucrative new deal.

However, keeping Brooks was one of the Suns’ top priorities throughout the offseason. His extension reflects Phoenix’s broader strategy of securing its core for the future, following long-term commitments to Mark Williams, Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin, while also strengthening the roster with the offseason additions of Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard.
