Pistons Land 13.9-PPG Michigan Alum on $29 Million Contract To Bolster Roster Alongside Cade Cunningham

The Pistons continue reshaping their roster, landing a Michigan native that adds scoring, experience, and local roots into Detroit’s rebuild.

The Detroit Pistons made another splash in free agency with a move that brings scoring and homegrown appeal to their evolving roster.

Detroit Pistons Score a Big $29 Million Deal With Caris LeVert

This time, they’re banking on a homecoming to add scoring and leadership. Caris LeVert, a former Michigan Wolverine, has agreed to a two-year, $29 million deal with the Pistons, per ESPN’s senior insider Shams Charania.

Charania’s X post announcing the move read, “Free agent guard Caris LeVert has agreed to a two-year, $29 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN. Mark Bartelstein of (Priority Sports) and the Pistons negotiated terms of a deal that brings backcourt depth and a Michigan return.”

LeVert split last season between the Cavaliers and Hawks, averaging 12.1 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. Despite playing primarily off the bench, he remained one of the league’s most consistent secondary scorers. His fit with the Pistons projects to be providing scoring punch and a veteran presence in a young rotation anchored by Cunningham and Ausar Thompson.

A 6-foot-6 wing with ball-handling skills and proven scoring chops, LeVert has carved out a solid NBA career despite battling multiple injuries early on. He’s shot 34.5% from deep in his career but thrives most when attacking downhill and facilitating in secondary actions. His ability to play on or off the ball makes him a versatile option for head coach J.B Bickerstaff.

This signing marks another strong offseason play for Detroit. The Pistons, who won just 17 games two seasons ago, made a stunning jump to 44 wins last season. With continued growth from their young core and added depth through free agency, the franchise is trending upward.

A Look Into LeVert’s Professional Career So Far

LeVert was drafted 20th overall in 2016 by the Pacers but was traded on draft night to the Brooklyn Nets. After a promising start in Brooklyn, including a 51-point outing and a triple-double in 2020, he was moved to Indiana as part of the James Harden trade.

While with the Pacers, a routine physical revealed a cancerous mass on his kidney, leading to surgery and a courageous return to the court. He later found success with Cleveland and became a valued sixth man before a deadline trade in 2025 sent him to Atlanta.

With over 500 regular-season NBA games under his belt, the 30-year-old has averaged 13.9 PPG and played key roles across five franchises. Now, he returns to Michigan, looking to bring leadership, shot creation, and playoff aspirations to a rejuvenated Pistons squad.
