The Los Angeles Lakers had high hopes entering the 2024-25 NBA season. With a strong 50-32 regular season record, the team aimed to deliver LeBron James his fifth NBA championship.
But those dreams were short-lived. In a crushing blow, the Lakers were bounced in the first round of the playoffs as they fell 4-1 to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Now, just weeks after their postseason exit, the spotlight is back on the Purple and Gold.

LeBron James Has Exercised His 2025–26 Player Option
In a major twist, James has officially exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the news was confirmed by Klutch Sports CEO and James’s longtime agent, Rich Paul. But while this confirms James will be back for a 23rd NBA season, which is a league record, it doesn’t guarantee he’ll be wearing a Lakers jersey when it tips off.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive, and want what’s best for him,” said Paul as per ESPN.
Charania’s report further states that James “will be closely monitoring” the Lakers’ offseason moves to evaluate whether the franchise can build a contender around him. The team already made a blockbuster trade in February when they brought Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks.
While that move initially helped the team, it was not enough for a championship contention, and now the team needs to work on their weaknesses.
This revelation has sent shockwaves through the NBA community, especially considering just a few months ago, the narrative was very different.
Back in March, NBA insider Brett Siegel reported that James was likely to opt out of his player option. That move, at the time, was seen not as a money grab but as a strategic play that gave the Lakers the cap flexibility to reshape their roster in pursuit of a title.
“LeBron will likely opt out of his $50.6 million player option, but he is not expected to leave Los Angeles, league sources told ClutchPoints. This has been James’ strategy through the years, signing those unique ‘1+1’ contracts which give him and the Lakers flexibility to adjust their cap numbers accordingly,” wrote Siegel in his report.
So when the announcement came that James was opting in, it caught many off guard.
But this new direction comes with consequences. While locking James in for another year gives the Lakers some security, his hefty salary severely limits their financial flexibility. With so much of the cap tied up, it becomes increasingly difficult to sign top-tier free agents or make meaningful trades.
Which leads to the burning question: Will James stay with the Lakers beyond this season?
That answer may hinge entirely on how active and effective the Lakers’ front office is this offseason.
During the Minnesota series, the weakness in the center position was exposed. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka has acknowledged this issue publicly. In a recent interview with Spectrum SportsNet, he stated the team is “super active” in searching for a quality center.
“Super active. We’re gonna turn over every stone and whatever resources the collective bargaining agreement gives us, we’re gonna use to the utmost. That’s what we gotta do,” Pelinka said during the interview.
If the Lakers are able to land a strong big man and shore up their roster, James might see enough potential to stay and push for championship number five. If not, a move elsewhere could be on the horizon.
“LeBron James is clearly of the mindset that he wants to compete for a championship, and he’s gonna be monitoring very closely, are the Lakers gonna make the moves that put them in position to seriously compete in that vaunted Western Conference. And then, if not, where do those conversations go? That becomes a subplot of this offseason,” said Charania.

Regardless of where he plays, next season will be historic for James, as he’ll become the first player in NBA history to suit up for 23 seasons, and he’s just 50 games away from breaking Robert Parish’s all-time record for most career regular-season games.
This past season, James also became the first NBA player to surpass 42,000 points in the regular season. At age 40, he still averaged an impressive 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game.
