Fresh off his offseason trip to China, San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama provided insight into his physical transformation since joining the NBA.
Hailed as a generational 7-foot-3 big man coming out of France, Wembanyama has delivered since being selected No. 1 by San Antonio in the 2023 NBA Draft. He has thrived inside and out as a floor spacer, shot creator, rebounder and the league’s top shot blocker.
Even so, the one-time All-Star’s relatively frail frame raised concerns about his body’s long-term durability. However, it appears Wembanyama and his camp may have put those worries to rest ahead of his third NBA campaign.

Victor Wembanyama Says He Gained 30 Pounds Since His Rookie Season
On Saturday, Wembanyama attended Fanatics Fest in New York City, where he took part in a live cold plunge interview on comedian Kevin Hart’s “Cold as Balls” show. During the event, the 21-year-old revealed his considerable weight gain since 2023.
“I gained probably like 30 pounds,” Wembanyama said.
“30 pounds since coming into the NBA?” Hart asked.
“Yeah, two years,” Wembanyama confirmed.

The two-time NBA blocks leader noted that he entered the league at around 215-220 pounds and now weighs 245 pounds. This past season, he was listed at 235 pounds. That means he has already gained 10 pounds since his sophomore campaign was cut short by deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
Earlier this month, Wembanyama went viral for his training stint at the Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou, China. During the 10-day retreat, he shaved his head and embraced a disciplined routine featuring martial arts and meditation. Thus, he appears locked in as he works his way back from his blood clot scare.
Wembanyama Is Taking a Cautious Approach to Weight Gain
During his interview with Hart, Wembanyama was asked what he’s added to his fitness regimen that’s allowed him to bulk up. The Frenchman gave a nuanced answer, stressing the importance of not overdoing his workouts and hindering his on-court versatility.

“Strength training, of course, but the main thing, for me, is I could, in theory, put on a lot of weight, but I would lose some of my mobility, some of my athleticism,” Wembanyama said. “So, it’s something that needs to be done really carefully, and I have a lot of eyes and a lot of minds thinking about me in this instance.”
As such, it appears Spurs fans can expect the new-look Wembanyama to maintain his guard-like offensive skill set upon his eventual return.
