The Kentucky Wildcats have a rich history of sending elite guards to the NBA. The MVP of the league and potential champion, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is also one such product. But the latest prospect from the vaunted program descends from basketball royalty and is expecting his name to be called at the 2025 draft.
Jaxson Robinson, a shooting guard/small forward hybrid, is predicted by PFSN to go 51st to the Los Angeles Clippers in its latest mock draft. We’re taking a look at the prestigious lineage that has given him an excellent pathway to success on the hardwood.
Meet Jaxson Robinson’s Family
According to the University of Kentucky’s official website, Robinson was born to Brandi Robinson-McWilliams and James McWilliams.
Apart from his name, not much is known about James McWilliams in the public record. He fathered Robinson on Dec. 3, 2002, in Ada, Oklahoma. From an early age, Robinson has been trained by his mother and aunt, Crystal Robinson.
The Oklahoma legend was a sensational player in her own right, both at the collegiate level and in the WNBA, primarily for the New York Liberty. Currently, she serves in an assistant coaching capacity for the Chicago Sky.
But in a tell-all interview with On3, she recalled how the drive was present in her nephew from a young age as she instilled discipline into him.
“We work really, really hard. Jaxson works really hard on his game. He’s self-motivated. He doesn’t need anybody to make him go do it. It’s what it is. He gets his work in and he knows that to be prepared, he has to work at the level of the game.”
Unfortunately for Robinson, the early days weren’t kind to him, as Crystal admitted she was mean to him and would constantly yell at him in order to toughen him up. But there was an added benefit to that style as well.
“Quite frankly, when Jaxson gets mad or angry, he just elevates his level of play to something different. I just tried to poke the bear a little bit and he’d elevate his level of game and do really, really well.”
Crystal ensured that Robinson isn’t one-dimensional on the basketball court. He’s familiar with the ins and outs of the game so that he can dominate at all three levels.
Brandi Robinson-McWilliams, while not the caliber of player her sister was, is still a phenomenal athlete in her own right. An All-American at Southeastern State, she was described by Robinson as the most competitive player in the family.
Additionally, Kentucky Sports Radio put together a compilation on YouTube highlighting his upbringing in the world of basketball, including his grandmother, Nancy Robinson, who was an All-American at Murray State.
Both the Robinson sisters are part of the Southeastern Oklahoma State Hall of Fame. All three women in the Robinson family have had a knack for playing defense, something they’ve passed on to the Wildcat star as well.
He’s also developed a knack for their shooting prowess. At Kentucky, he averaged 13 points and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting almost seven 3-pointers a game at a 37.6 percent clip.
