Details Emerge About Victor Wembanyama’s ‘Summer Retreat’ Among Monks at Shaolin Temple

Victor Wembanyama trains with Shaolin monks in China as new details emerge about his intense offseason retreat.

While most NBA stars unwind during the offseason, Victor Wembanyama chose a different path — one rooted in discipline, not downtime.

The San Antonio Spurs phenom traveled to China this summer, where he’s spending time at the famed Shaolin Temple in what he calls a “journey of inner discipline, focus, and mind-body harmony.” The move has drawn praise across social media, further cementing Wembanyama’s reputation as one of the league’s most dedicated rising stars.

After missing a significant stretch of his rookie season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, the 7’4″ center appears fully committed to returning stronger, both physically and mentally. And now, intriguing new details from his retreat are starting to surface.

Fascinating Details About Victor Wembanyama’s Journey for Mind-Body Harmony

Spurs reporter Dusty Garza posted recent details from China regarding Wembanyama’s journey.

“Victor Wembanyama is taking his retreat seriously and doesn’t want to be disturbed,” he posted. “Sightings are rare, though Monks have gotten photos and autographs while tourists mostly leave him alone.”

Before he joined the camp, Wembanyama shaved his head, preparing for his spiritual journey. Fans saw pictures of the player with monks, and he ran beside them as part of the training camp routines. Most fans appreciated him for taking his career seriously.

“I’m told ‘Shaolin Wemby’ has been waking up at 4:30 a.m. to run and has been spotted occasionally near Bodhidharma Cave and on temple paths,” Garza added. “Morning training typically happens inside temple grounds while lunch is off-site. He runs again around 5 p.m. before evening class.”

For starters, Wembanyama donned monastic robes for an intense training session at the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province. They also shared vegetarian meals before their 10-day spiritual journey to learn Shaolin Kung-Fu. The well-renowned temple is the birthplace of Shaolin Kung-Fu and Chan Buddhism. While most NBA players visit China for business or entertainment, the country’s cultural offerings inspire Wemby.

While the Shaolin Temple has kept Wembanyama’s visit low-profile via limiting media access and turning away interview requests, fans have occasionally caught glimpses of the French phenom jogging and interacting with monks. The retreat itself mirrors the ancient Buddhist tradition of Vassa, a seasonal period of spiritual focus and discipline.
