‘Stupidest People in the World’ — Charles Barkley Blasts Knicks After 5-Straight Rejections During Coaching Search

Charles Barkley torches the Knicks’ coaching search, calling them the "stupidest people in the world."

Charles Barkley didn’t hold back when weighing in on the New York Knicks’ chaotic coaching search. The Hall of Famer and TNT analyst called the franchise’s recent moves “one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen,” adding fuel to an already smoldering fire in New York.

Charles Barkley Slams Knicks as “Stupidest People” for Firing Tom Thibodeau

The Knicks’ head coach seat remains unoccupied. The team’s opening volleys in this search met immediate resistance. They sought permission to interview Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, which was rebuffed.

Similarly, Ime Udoka (Houston Rockets), Chris Finch (Minnesota Timberwolves), Quin Snyder (Atlanta Hawks), and Billy Donovan (Chicago Bulls) all turned down requests to speak to the Knicks. Reports from Sports Illustrated indicate that each coach’s current franchise declined to make them available.

On NBA TV, Barkley unleashed his verdict.

“The Knicks gotta be the stupidest damn people in the world,” he said. “You don’t fire no good coach like that and don’t have a plan… Now, the three coaches turn you down. You gotta have a plan, man. And, they don’t have a plan. Now, I don’t know what the hell they’re going to do.”

His comments echo frustrations around Madison Square Garden’s reputation for erratic decision-making and a front office still seeking its identity outside Thibodeau’s steady hand, who took the reins starting 2020-21.

The outburst came after multiple high-profile coaching candidates reportedly turned down interview requests, leaving the Knicks scrambling just days after firing Tom Thibodeau. Despite Thibodeau leading the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years, the front office opted for a dramatic shake-up—and now appears to be paying the price.

Barkley’s harsh words, which followed his own public refusal to entertain a coaching role with the Knicks, reflect growing league-wide skepticism over how the team is being run. What started as a high-stakes reset is quickly turning into a cautionary tale in organizational dysfunction.

The Knicks’ firing of Thibodeau was officially announced on June 3, 2025. This shocked many, given his role in guiding the New York Knicks to their first Conference Finals appearance in 25 years and delivering consecutive 50-win seasons. In five seasons with the Knicks, Thibodeau steered to four postseason appearances.

Yet, despite these achievements, the decision-makers opted for a change. This ignited a flurry of speculation across the basketball world as fans and pundits slammed the Knicks.

According to Andy Backstrom of Yahoo! Sports, Knicks President Leon Rose asserted that their decision to fire Thibodeau was what “we feel is best for our organization moving forward.”

Barkley Would Refuse to Coach Knicks, Thibodeau Bids Adieu With Post

On June 11, Thibodeau broke his silence on his untimely termination.

“When I was hired in 2020, I said this was my dream job,” he said. “I am grateful that dream became a reality. Thank you to our players and coaching staff who gave everything they had, and to everyone who makes this franchise special.”

This highlighted how nobody expected this outcome to occur. Even Thibodeau himself.

According to Athlon Sports on June 5, Barkley had made a bold statement about his stand on coaching the Knicks on “The Next Round” show. He expressed being “shocked” just like the rest of the world and straight-forwardly turned down any thoughts of coaching New York.

“No, I would not like to coach the New York Knicks,” Barkley added. “First of all, everybody was shocked… I think people were shocked. No. 1, it’s a really good job—it’s the New York Knicks. New York is a special place, and if you get a chance, especially when they’ve got a good team, it’s incredible.”

In the end, the Knicks’ next move won’t just shape their coaching future — it will define how seriously they respond to league-wide scrutiny. Until the front office proves it can chart a clear, competent course forward, Barkley’s biting critique won’t just sting — it’ll stick.
