Victor Wembanyama is spending part of his offseason worlds away from the NBA spotlight — and the images coming out of China are leaving basketball fans stunned. The 7-foot-3 San Antonio Spurs phenom was recently photographed with a shaved head and wearing traditional Shaolin monk robes during a 10-day spiritual retreat at the legendary Shaolin Temple.
NBA X Erupts After Viral Photo Shows San Antonio Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama Embracing Monk Life
The viral photos sparked a wave of reaction, with many fans barely recognizing the towering star. But for those familiar with Wembanyama’s unique personality, this latest move fits perfectly into the path he’s been carving both on and off the court.
On June 8, NBA insider Dusty Garza tweeted, “Someone just sent me this wild photo — looks like Victor Wembanyama at the Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou, fully embracing monk life. Word is, his group already left the area on their own. The NBA is in trouble and they don’t even know it yet.”

Garza later added, “According to multiple independent sources, ‘Victor Wembanyama is not only deeply interested in Shaolin culture, he had a master shave his head and is now beginning a 10-day retreat at that temple. His upcoming travel plans have been paused, and his entourage has already left.'”

Garza’s tweet prompted NBA fans to joke about whether he’ll stay or return. Two fans had opposing takes on Wembanyama’s retreat, with one commenting, “MVP season in bound,” and the other, “Spurs in trouble.”

Wembanyama’s Shaolin Retreat Signals Deeper Offseason Focus Beyond the NBA
Wembanyama has long demonstrated that his ambitions stretch far beyond basketball. The French-born superstar once told The Ringer, “The goal for me in my life is to accomplish myself and to be a complete human being.” That mindset is now on full display, as he’s chosen to immerse himself in Shaolin monk life — an experience marked by discipline, meditation, and physical training.
This offseason presented Wembanyama with a rare opportunity. After deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder prematurely ended his 2024–25 NBA campaign, he now has a more traditional summer to reset. Rather than focus on basketball drills or vacationing, he’s opted to travel through China, making stops at the Great Wall and local cultural sites. But it’s his commitment to this 10-day Shaolin retreat in Zhengzhou that has truly captured the attention of fans worldwide.
At Shaolin, Wembanyama is far from the comforts of NBA life. Reports indicate that he voluntarily rearranged his travel plans to fully commit to the temple’s demanding daily schedule. His days have included kung fu training, breathwork exercises, meditation, and silent meals with the monks — an environment where celebrity status holds no value.
This is not an out-of-character move for Wembanyama. According to ESPN, he has been spotted sketching in pencil and reading philosophy and fantasy novels. Now, the player known for leading the NBA in blocks is building a different kind of strength: Mental clarity and inner calm.

Drafted No. 1 overall by San Antonio in 2023, Wembanyama won Rookie of the Year honors and has quickly become one of the league’s most dynamic stars. In two seasons, he’s averaged 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game — all while elevating the Spurs’ national profile.
Wembanyama dedicated much of last season to preparing for and competing with Team France, which reached the Olympic gold-medal game before falling to Team USA and Stephen Curry’s standout performance.
With his viral new look and sharpened perspective, Wembanyama is poised to return to the NBA this fall with renewed purpose. His time at Shaolin will likely leave a lasting imprint — and make an already fearsome competitor even more formidable. The league has been warned that the monk phase of Wembanyama’s journey is just beginning.
