Could The Spurs Trade De’Aaron Fox or Stephon Castle? Ex-NBA Executive Ignites Trade Rumors

As the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the draft, one ex-NBA executive suggests they could be seeking to trade De'Aaron Fox or Stephon Castle.

The San Antonio Spurs are riding high after securing the second pick in the NBA draft. The Spurs, who secured the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, which led to them securing Victor Wembanyama, then secured a top draft pick to take Stephon Castle in the first round in 2024, have recently walked into tremendous NBA draft luck.

With the second draft pick in the 2025 NBA draft, many are curious about who the Spurs could select, with several names being thrown around. Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey from Rutgers are projected to be Top 5 picks.

There’s always the chance that the Spurs want to keep their second pick, which could cause some friction with their game plan for next season. If the Spurs select Harper, they would have some tough decisions with their leading guards.

Could The Spurs Trade De’Aaron Fox or Stephon Castle?

While it seems unlikely to happen, the Spurs could look into trading star point guard De’Aaron Fox or reigning Rookie of the Year guard Stephon Castle. John Hollinger, former NBA executive and current writer for The Athletic, tossed around the idea of the Spurs potentially being interested in moving one of their dynamic guards.

While the concept of keeping Fox and Castle with the addition of Harper, there’s no guarantee that the Spurs will keep the pick or select Harper, but if they don’t want to keep Harper, several teams could be interested in acquiring the pick.

Could teams like the Washington Wizards, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trailblazers be interested in acquiring Fox or Castle? Castle will make $9,560,520 this coming season, and Fox will make $37,096,620, so unless the Spurs are considering entering the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, their trade partner options seem to be limited.

Can The Spurs Make The Playoffs Next Season?

If the Spurs do indeed keep Castle and Fox while drafting Harper, they would have three of the most interesting guards on their roster. The Spurs could seek to move Harrison Barnes or Keldon Johnson to create some space or upgrade at the wing.

Wembanyama, Fox, Castle, and Harper could be a playoff team together, but things have to align for this to occur. Wembanyama will be one of the best players in the league next season, while Fox will likely be in the upper echelon of guards once again. If Harper can live up to his potential while Castle takes a sophomore season leap, the Spurs might be able to compete with anybody in the league.
