When ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Thursday that Kawhi Leonard had zero knowledge of the Los Angeles Clippers’ salary cap circumvention that resulted in historic penalties, fans didn’t buy it.
Moreover, investigative journalist Pablo Torre called attention to Leonard’s signature on his controversial $28 million no-show endorsement contract.

What started as a secret scheme to bend the salary cap rules just blew up into the harshest punishment in NBA history.
After a nearly yearlong investigation, the league slapped the Clippers with a $30 million fine, stripped five future first-round draft picks, and suspended owner Steve Ballmer for a full year.
The findings completely vindicated Torre, who first exposed the off-the-books scheme last year involving a $28 million side arrangement with the green finance firm Aspiration.
While the penalties rained down on LA’s front office, Charania attempted to clear Leonard of any wrongdoing.
Reporting on air, Shams claimed the NBA’s probe showed the two-time champion had zero knowledge of the cap circumvention. He stated that the superstar had essentially given all decision-making power to his ex-business manager and uncle, Dennis Robertson, who received a five-year ban from the league.

The basketball world instantly pushed back. Fans, analysts, and even a player unleashed on Charania, accusing the insider of acting as a PR mouthpiece for Leonard’s camp.

“[Expletive] Shams, you’re lying. Everybody knows you’re lying. Just like Kawhi Leonard, ESPN, and the NBA all knew that Kawhi was aware of this deal with Uncle Dennis – we are also. So again, [expletive], Shams Charania,” one user bashed Charania.

One X user questioned how the ESPN analyst could “lie so blatantly,” writing:

“Shams has been such a downgrade from Woj,” another user added.
The main reason nobody bought the clueless Leonard defense was the paper trail Torre had already laid out. This includes photographic proof of the 35-year-old’s signature on the $28 million Aspiration contract, along with NBA findings showing that he personally requested changes to his payment structure.

Speaking on the situation with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Torre dismantled the narrative directly:
“I’m a big fan of treating adults like adults. Kawhi Leonard is 35 years old, and we have documents, the Aspiration contract, in fact, a $28 million contract in which his signature is on it. We have the money flows.”

The contrast in outcomes couldn’t be starker. For the seven-time NBA All-Star, paying a $700,000 fine and shifting the blame onto “Uncle Dennis” allows him to dodge a playing suspension and head back to the Toronto Raptors relatively unscathed.
Meanwhile, the Clippers are left staring into the abyss. Stripped of draft picks through 2033, operating under strict league monitoring, and locked out from their own owner’s involvement for a full year, LA faces a grim, painful rebuild.
