After becoming a free agent for the first time in years this offseason, LeBron James immediately drew interest from several NBA teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A recent report revealed that Cleveland had a rare chance to convince James to return home. Former NBA player and analyst Kendrick Perkins didn’t hold back in criticizing the Cavaliers after learning they failed to capitalize on that opportunity.
Kendrick Perkins Predicts Bleak Future for Cavaliers After Missing Out on LeBron James
The Cavaliers were widely viewed as a legitimate threat to bring the NBA icon back to Cleveland while James was still weighing his options in free agency.
During a recent episode of the Game Over Podcast, league insider Shams Charania disclosed that James met with the Cavaliers’ entire front office in Akron in early July as part of his free agency process. Charania explained that he initially chose not to report the meeting because it had taken place off the record.
Charania later revealed on ESPN’s NBA Today that the Cavaliers were the only organization that James agreed to meet with in person during the process. That alone suggested there was genuine mutual interest in a reunion, but despite having that exclusive opportunity, the Cavaliers were unable to turn it into a deal.
The missed chance drew a strong reaction from James’ former teammate Kendrick Perkins, who compared Cleveland’s failure to Boston missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo before he landed in Miami. Perkins argued that letting James slip away could have long-term consequences for the franchise.
“This is worse than Brad Stevens losing Giannis to the Miami Heat and Pat Riley,” Perkins said. “I think the Cavs, they probably won’t sniff another championship for the next ten years. When here it is, you had a chance to actually make some powerful moves this offseason, and one of them was acquiring LeBron James and then bringing them back to Cleveland.”

The Cavaliers made every effort to bring the four-time NBA champion back to his hometown. According to Charania, Cleveland team president of basketball operations Koby Altman, assistant general manager Brandon Weems, and vice president of business Grant Gilbert all met privately with James in early July to make their pitch.
Even before that, Brian Windhorst reported that James Harden was willing to adjust the terms of his contract if it helped the Cavaliers create a path to acquire the former Los Angeles Lakers star. The Cavaliers ultimately lost the race to the Philadelphia 76ers despite the extensive efforts from Cleveland’s front office and players.
However, Philadelphia also had to work hard to secure James’ commitment. According to Ramona Shelburne, James initially had concerns about Joel Embiid’s durability. Before James finalized his decision, Embiid personally met with him in Los Angeles and reassured him that his health would not be an issue going forward.
The 76ers also benefited from Tyrese Maxey’s relentless recruiting efforts throughout the offseason. James’ agent, Rich Paul, later revealed that Philadelphia wasn’t even viewed as a serious destination until the franchise completed its trade for Jaylen Brown.
In the end, the 76ers successfully persuaded James to join the fourth franchise of his NBA career. The decision also gives the four-time MVP a historic opportunity to become the first player in league history to win NBA championships with four different organizations.
