‘His Decision Is Dragging Out’ — 76ers President Mike Gansey Gets Honest on LeBron James’ NBA Free-Agency Saga

Philadelphia 76ers’ President Mike Gansey opens up about the agonizing wait for LeBron James' massive free-agency decision.

LeBron James’ highly anticipated free-agency decision has the entire basketball world holding its breath. Although the 41-year-old has made his return for the historic 24th NBA season official, wild speculation about his possible final destination has sent the rumor mill spinning out of control.

The Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as a premier destination after pulling off a blockbuster trade for five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown. Yet, despite pitching a championship-ready roster to the four-time NBA champion, the front office finds itself caught in an agonizing waiting game.

Mike Gansey Opens Up About LeBron James’ Free-Agency Stagnation

The newly appointed President of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers has opened up about the franchise’s ongoing pursuit of the four-time MVP, and that the franchise has been in constant contact with Klutch Sports CEO and James’ agent, Rich Paul.

“We’ve had conversations with Rich, really, since the Jaylen trade,” Philadelphia 76ers President Michael Gansey told The Athletic.

“LeBron and his camp have kept quiet, and there has been speculation for different teams. But we’d obviously love to have LeBron. I respect the heck out of him. In my opinion, he’s the best player of all time,” he said.

He added, “I think his decision is dragging out because he has a lot of good options and he wants to figure it out. He would obviously add a lot to our team. But at the end of the day, I know he’s going to make the right decision for him and his family.”

Gansey, who crossed paths with James during their respective high school days in Ohio and later during the Cavaliers’ historic 2016 championship run, is excited for this reunion and hopes to welcome the superstar to Philadelphia soon.

ESPN’s Shams Charania recently reported that the 76ers have emerged as one of the top 3 frontrunners to land the 22-time All-Star, and that James is also considering their pitch “really seriously.”

While some analysts, like former NFL star Chad Johnson, suggest Philly might not be the right fit for the league’s leading scorer, as it has too many players trying to prove something, Gansey remains incredibly optimistic about James’ addition to the roster alongside newly added Jaylen Brown and core elements like Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

The organization is looking for a high-caliber player like James who can lead the young team on the court and help nurture a winning culture in their revamped locker room.

“If he [James] decides to come here, we’re going to be even better,” shared Gansey.

While the offer has been pitched and the intentions have been made clear, all that remains is the wait, as only LeBron knows which jersey he will wear in the upcoming 2026-27 season.
