On Tuesday, LeBron James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not be returning to play for them.
Three days after James’ announcement, his agent, Rich Paul, told his “Game Over” podcast co-host Max Kellerman that multiple teams have already shown interest in signing the four-time MVP.
NBA insider Ric Bucher pushed back on Sunday about the prevailing narrative of James’ graceful exit and Paul’s claim of teams lining up for a chance to get the 22-time All-Star.
NBA Insider Doesn’t Buy the Popular LeBron James Lakers Exit Narrative
James’ exit seemed inevitable when the Lakers did not offer him a contract extension heading into the 2025-26 season. Moreover, the team wasted no time in giving Luka Dončić a three-year, $165 million max deal. With the Lakers prioritizing the Slovenian, James’ days in Los Angeles were numbered.
NBA insider Dave McMenamin reported last month that the Lakers could offer James a new three-year, $182 million contract, but added that “nobody around the league expects the team to offer James anywhere close to that.” McMenamin essentially wrote that the Lakers did not plan on keeping James.
Bucher jumped to the same conclusion via his “On The Ball With Ric Bucher” podcast.
“It became clear that they were ready to move on without LeBron (James) unless he was willing to swallow a huge slice of humble pie along with a massive pay cut to stay in the Lakers’ uniform. … I had to smile when it was reported that LeBron informed the Lakers he didn’t intend to play for them next year, as if the Lakers weren’t already planning for that to be the case.
Ric Bucher says the Lakers had already planned to get rid of Lebron since the Luka trade and finds it funny that Lebron tried to make it seem like he was the one that decided he was leaving and calls BS on Rich Paul saying all these teams are interested in Lebron

“Kudos to the Lakers for allowing LeBron to present it that way and preserve some dignity on the way out,” Bucher said.
According to the NBA analyst, “graceful exits, after all, have not been his thing,” but James managed that in his split with the Lakers. A few hours after the four-time NBA champ announced his plans to play elsewhere, the team posted a note of appreciation for him on social media. James responded in kind, giving his stay in Hollywood a happy and definitive closure.
Since James announced his decision to take his talents elsewhere, Paul has been doing the rounds, telling everyone there has been no shortage of suitors for the NBA’s all-time scoring leader.
On Friday, McMenamin reported that the Klutch Sports Group CEO has “spoken to 27 teams about James.”
Bucher pushed back on Paul’s spin.
“The Rich Paul propaganda…is just window dressing. If teams were interested, they wouldn’t have to reach out to them. It’s a sign that LeBron and Rich are struggling with the new reality: LeBron simply isn’t valued the way he once was. He does not have the leverage he once did,” Bucher continued.

Paul showed on his whiteboard multiple teams that he said James has been considering playing for. The Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers were among the options the agent discussed on the podcast.
While there are different versions of the story behind James’ exit, the interest surrounding his next basketball destination continues to intrigue the NBA world. The suspense could go on for months as James will reportedly take his time to weigh his options carefully.
