Jalen Brunson’s Clutch Game 1 Performance vs. Spurs Draws Adulation

Brunson sustained two health setbacks in the first half, tweaking his right knee late in the first quarter before returning and landing awkwardly on his left ankle midway through the second quarter.

Still, the Knicks standout, who has been one of the most reliable performers this postseason, stayed in the game, mustering 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting (33.3%) in the first half.

New York’s offensive struggles persisted after halftime, as it fell behind by as many as 14 points in the third quarter. However, the Knicks mounted a furious comeback, evening up the score at 76-76 heading into the final frame behind a 22-9 run, setting the stage for Brunson to take over late.

In the fourth quarter, the three-time All-Star relentlessly attacked the rim, converting a series of critical floaters and layups. With New York trailing 95-94, Brunson then connected on a go-ahead corner 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining.

That kicked off an 11-0 game-closing run for the Knicks, which was punctuated by Brunson splashing an off-balance midrange jumper to extend his team’s edge to 101-95 with 37.8 seconds to go.

After outdueling Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama (26 points) and adding to his sensational postseason run with a game-high 30-point performance, Brunson left the NBA community on X singing his praises.

“JALEN BRUNSON IS A MONSTER!” Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor exclaimed.

“Jalen Brunson… COLD-BLOODED,” Barstool Sports captioned the Knicks star’s clutch triple.

“Jalen Brunson is an ice-in-the-veins killer. Just an absolute monster closer,” Spotrac’s Keith Smith gushed.

“Jalen Brunson really is in a class of his own when it comes to the fourth quarter. Holy smokes. 13 points on 9 shots. All in the clutch. ‘Captain Clutch’ is a well-deserved nickname,” The Athletic’s Esfandiar Baraheni raved.

“This game is going exactly like how I knew this series would. Brunson would feast on this young Spurs team in the 4th. So obvious,” Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy reacted.

“We are underselling what is going to happen if Jalen wins this series. Statue? Hell no, rename it Brunson Station,” NBA personality Rob Perez wrote.

With their comeback victory, the Knicks extended their historic playoff winning streak to a franchise-record 12 games. Their last defeat came early in Round 1 against the Atlanta Hawks.

They will look to keep the momentum going and steal another contest against Wembanyama and Co. during Friday’s Game 2 showdown in San Antonio.
