A sad fact about LeBron James being the most popular basketball star of the 21st century is that he has his fair share of haters.
That started the minute he first set foot on an NBA floor with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and that hasn’t changed, leading up to his last game with the Los Angeles Lakers almost 23 years later.
LeBron James Called ‘Insufferable,’ ‘Egotistical,’ & a ‘Man-Child’
During his appearance on “Fearless with Jason Whitlock,” Jay Skapinac vented his frustrations about James’ ego following reports about Rob Pelinka reportedly snubbing him by not giving him the game ball after he broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record for the most wins in NBA history.
“At 41 years old, this guy has adult children himself,” Skapinac said. “(James) is still an insufferable, egotistical little man-child that has to have every single thing rotating around him.
“…So basically, this narcissist had to sit back and say, ‘Oh, well, I’m gonna show how bad the Lakers are treating me. Let me give them this story about how I passed Kareem for the most wins in NBA history, and my GM had the audacity to not give me the game ball and make it all about me.'”

Whether one agrees with Skapinac or not, can anyone blame James for his ego? Not many basketball players ever received the same hype before even entering the NBA, so it makes sense that he bought some of it.
More than that, he’s backed it up with what he can do on a basketball court. That’s what happens when the spotlight is very much on you ever since your high school days.
It also comes with a fair amount of drama, as James may be quick to make a stink when things are not going his way. Perhaps for the first time in his career, the ends didn’t justify the means with the Lakers nearly as much as they used to with the Cavaliers and Heat.
His tenure with the Lakers has had its peaks and valleys since 2018. They won a championship, but also missed the playoffs. They orchestrated one of the worst trades in NBA history when they acquired Russell Westbrook, then suddenly became the beneficiaries of one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history when they acquired Luka Dončić.
And for what it’s worth, James has gotten better at keeping his ego in check. He didn’t think it through when he orchestrated “The Decision” back in 2010, which made him look pretty bad. Also, he hasn’t had the best responses when his team fails or struggles, but recently, he’s toned it down.
It’s pretty hard for someone like James not to have an unchecked ego, but he has proven that the bad actions he commits aren’t typically driven by pure malice. So even if Skapinac clearly is annoyed by the Lakers legend, it could be worse.
