‘Refs Already Calling Fouls,’ ‘Obvious’ — NBA World Split on Controversial Call in First Second of Lakers-Thunder Game 3

Deandre Ayton drawing a foul one second into Game 3 fuels ongoing controversy over officiating during the Lakers-Thunder matchup.

The Los Angeles Lakers entered Crypto.com Arena staring down a 2-0 deficit in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The two teams barely let a single second tick off the clock in Game 3 before officiating became the topic of discussion again.

Lakers vs. Thunder Game 3 Opening Tip Call Sparks Divided Reactions

Tensions were already high following the Lakers’ Game 2 loss, which featured controversial calls and a tense postgame incident when Austin Reaves confronted crew chief John Goble.

On Saturday, Deandre Ayton lined up against Chet Holmgren for the opening jump ball to start Game 3.

While Los Angeles was focused on getting back into the series, Ayton was called for a foul just one second into the game after making contact with Holmgren on the opening tip.

Social media was equally quick to react to the eventful start, with fans split on whether the officiating decision was correct.

“Foul call on the Lakers in the first second of the game 😭✌️OKC’s whistle is undefeated,” one account posted.

“GAME LITERALLY JUST STARTED and the refs already calling fouls on the Lakers 😭💀Thunder got the best whistle of all time lmaoo,” Hater Report remarked.

“You can’t make this up man…” a user exclaimed.

“They didn’t even let the game breathe 😭,” one user commented.

“After all the officiating talk by the Lakers after Game 2, Deandre Ayton is called for a foul one second into Game 3,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin wrote.

“This is an obvious foul,” one user wrote.

Ahead of Game 3, the league’s senior VP and head of referee development, Monty McCutchen, spoke to ESPN about the criticism toward the referees.

“We want professionalism and our group to provide it,” McCutchen said. “This is the best time of the year, and there is a lot of passion… We expect some conflict, of course… Do we make mistakes as officials? Yeah, we can own that part of it… Referees are not perfect this time of the year, and every championship run involves overcoming mistakes by the referees.”
