After enduring frustrating officiating throughout the night, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers let go of the ropes in Thursday’s Game 2 road matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, falling 125-107.
While the seemingly lopsided whistle was the main storyline, NFL legend Shannon Sharpe, an avid James supporter, insisted postgame that the 22-time All-Star could’ve done more to push his team over the top.

Despite LA entering as a heavy underdog with its top player, Luka Dončić (hamstring), still sidelined, it kept within striking distance early before taking a narrow 58-57 lead into halftime.
However, as tensions mounted to start the third quarter following a controversial flagrant foul from Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Austin Reaves, the game began to slip away.
After the reigning MVP checked out with the Lakers ahead 65-61, his squad flexed its depth and all-around talent advantage. OKC rallied to seize control of the contest, entering the fourth quarter with a 93-80 lead.
The Thunder outscored LA 36-22 in the third quarter despite Gilgeous-Alexander contributing just 2 points, with the defending champions fueled by a collective effort from the likes of Chet Holmgren, Jared McCain, and Ajay Mitchell.
Meanwhile, James recorded just 4 points in the frame, shooting 2-for-5 (40%) as the Lakers struggled to stop the onslaught.
“I was disappointed in LeBron’s play tonight. He wasn’t aggressive at all,” Sharpe said on Thursday’s edition of “Nightcap.”
“He was very content to just stand in the corner and then try to get the ball at the nail and then try to do something. That’s not gonna cut it. … And the little flurry that he had in the fourth quarter, that’s not enough.
“We needed that assertiveness in the third quarter. … Call the guys and say, ‘Look, this is where we try to get some separation. This is where we try to put some distance between us and them.’ Their best player is gone, and what do they do? The team goes on a 14-2 run. I’m like, are you kidding me?”
James ended the evening with a respectable 23 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals, shooting 9-for-18 (50%), but attempted just 4 free throws. Afterward, Lakers coach JJ Redick contended that the 41-year-old receives the “worst whistle of any star player” he has ever seen.

Regardless, James and Co. will need to find offensive answers quickly as the Western Conference semifinal series shifts to Los Angeles for Saturday’s Game 3 showdown, with OKC (2-0) cruising despite getting two relatively pedestrian performances from Gilgeous-Alexander thus far.
