There was no questioning LeBron James’ ability to carry the Los Angeles Lakers after the team’s Game 6 win over the Houston Rockets. The 41-year-old lifted the depleted Lakers into the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, surviving a brutal six-game slugfest because their oldest player refused to let the season end.
James logged heavy minutes on Friday night (and throughout the first-round series as a whole) to eliminate Houston in front of a stunned Toyota Center crowd, and then delivered a clear message about his battle against Father Time.

Entering the series, Houston was a heavy favorite since Los Angeles was missing Luka DonÄiÄ (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique). The Slovenian, in particular, had transformed the Lakers’ offensive system, and it didn’t seem like the Lakers were deep enough to withstand injuries to two of their three stars.
Many NBA pundits believed that James and Co. would lose in the first round, with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith taking it one step further by predicting that Los Angeles would get swept.

But thanks to a James legacy series against Houston, Los Angeles is now heading to its first Western Conference semifinals since 2023.
After the Lakers’ Game 6 win over the Rockets, the 41-year-old got candid about his ongoing battle against Father Time.
“Iām kicking his a**⦔ James said. “He can go to somebody else at this point. He already lost to me. Itās over with.”

After the Lakers dropped Games 4 and 5, criticism mounted, but James shut down every doubt with a vintage closeout performance.
Logging 37 minutes during the 98-78 closeout win on Friday night, he recorded a game-high 28 points, as well as 8 assists and 7 rebounds, shooting 10-of-25 from the floor.
While Reaves’ recent return provided a desperately needed boost to Los Angeles, things will get significantly harder starting Tuesday night.
The Lakers will face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, who swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging nearly 34 points in the playoffs this for the defending champions.
JamesĀ previewed the difficult Round 2 matchupĀ against OKC and remained confident.
āObviously, weāre playing against the defending champions⦠They play physical, handsy defense, and if you allow them to get a lot of pick-sixes, it just ignites their home court and their team,ā James said. āWe know the head of the snake, a possible back-to-back MVP for Shai, but theyāre a fully equipped team⦠But weāre ready for the challenge.ā
If Los Angeles wants any outside chance of going through, they cannot afford sloppy turnovers or bad transition defense against OKC. Getting Reaves back to 100% and DonÄiÄ returning at some point mid-series will be huge for Los Angeles’ chances as well.
But, of course, James will play a huge factor in the series. He was the best player in the Lakers-Rockets first-round clash, proving he’s still capable of putting a team on his back and dominating for stretches even at 41 years old.
Father Time is undefeated, but James is putting up a hell of a fight.
