The Houston Rockets have done something nobody expected. Down 3-0 to the Los Angeles Lakers and playing without their best player, the Rockets have rattled off two straight wins to pull within one game of forcing a series that appeared to be completely over.
Game 6 tips off tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video, and the question that has floated over this entire series is the same one being asked again on Friday morning.
Will Kevin Durant play tonight? The official NBA injury report has now given a definitive answer.

What Is Kevin Durant’s Status for Game 6?
Durant is listed as out on the official NBA injury report due to a left ankle sprain. This will be the fifth game he has missed in a series he has only appeared in once, and according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, there was never much hope of him suiting up tonight.
The bone bruise in his left ankle carries a minimum two-week recovery timeline. Durant suffered the injury on April 21 during Game 2, meaning even if the Rockets force a Game 7 on Sunday, he would have just 12 days of recovery time, making that appearance a real race against the clock.
The fact that Houston has pulled this off without Durant makes the run all the more remarkable. The Lakers have shot just 24.5 percent from three across Games 4 and 5 combined while coughing up 39 turnovers in that same stretch.
Austin Reaves returned for Game 5 after his oblique injury but shot 4-of-16 from the field in 34 minutes, and Luka Dončić remains out with his Grade 2 hamstring strain. LeBron James is essentially carrying this team on his back at 41 years old, and the Rockets have figured out how to make even that difficult.
Charania noted on ESPN that the chemistry question looming over this team is whether Durant can actually fit in with Houston’s young core of Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Amen Thompson when he does return.
Those three, alongside Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason, make up the youngest starting five to win a game in NBA playoff history. They have built something real without Durant over the past three games, and that dynamic will be fascinating to watch if this series reaches a Game 7.
For tonight, Houston simply needs to find a way to win one more game. A win keeps alive the chance of making history as the first team ever to overcome a 3-0 deficit. A loss ends the season. Durant will be watching from the bench either way.
