Luka Dončić is doing all he can to return to the court for the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of their first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets.
While the injured six-time All-Star just wrapped up his second regular season with the Purple and Gold, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes his legacy is already on the line.

Emmanuel Acho Urges Luka Dončić to ‘Continue Legendary Career Arc’ in 2026 NBA Playoffs
Dončić peaked in March, tallying a staggering 600-point total, the most in that month in franchise history. However, his momentum was promptly derailed by a Grade 2 left hamstring strain that he suffered during LA’s 139-96 April 2 road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The setback cost Dončić the final five games of the regular season, with the 27-year-old traveling to Spain to receive multiple injections over the last week in an effort to expedite his return.
While Dončić is reportedly heading back to LA on Friday, he remains without a timetable to return from his injury, which typically requires a monthlong recovery period. The No. 4-seeded Lakers (53-29) tip off Round 1 against the No. 5-seeded Rockets (52-30) at home on Saturday, with star guard Austin Reaves (oblique) also on the injury report.
That leaves 41-year-old LeBron James as LA’s centerpiece, with the betting odds favoring Kevin Durant and Co. to take care of business against the undermanned squad. According to Acho, if Dončić can’t make a triumphant comeback, it would hinder his legacy, which he believes was built primarily on postseason success.
“Luka’s career, his legacy, is about the playoffs,” Acho began on Monday’s edition of the “Speakeasy” podcast.
“Luka became Luka based on what he did to the [Los Angeles] Clippers, became Luka based on what he did to Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns, when he outscored the Suns single-handedly in the first half of an elimination game. That’s when Luka became Luka.
“Luka’s had a 70-point [regular-season] game, don’t think about it that often. … Luka has become a legend because of playoff moments. He has to continue this legendary career arc because otherwise, cool, be a great regular-season performer, but two years into your LA stint, and you are a no-show? And the first year into your LA stint, you got bounced, I believe it was in Round 1?”
Acho even went as far as to proclaim Dončić’s brief Lakers stint a letdown should he continue to be held out of action.
“So, now you have one playoff appearance yourself, Luka in two years with the Lakers, and you got no series wins? That’s a disappointment,” Acho asserted.
“Luka became Luka because of his playoff performances… HE HAS TO COME BACK to save his legacy with the Lakers”

Despite Acho’s alarmist take, Dončić is still in the early stages of his prime, two years removed from his first NBA Finals appearance, and is coming off the second-best scoring campaign of his eight-year career.
Across 64 appearances, the superstar guard averaged a league-leading 33.5 points per game, delivering exactly the type of production Lakers fans hoped for when he was stunningly acquired from the Dallas Mavericks at last year’s trade deadline.
